About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Good for business meals
The Tickell Arms is the 5th pub/restaurant to join the Cambscuisine stable. A fantastic Grade 2 listed building with a new conservatory overlooking its iconic pond. The food is Modern British/European with an emphasis on locally sourced, fresh, seasonal ingredients. The menu changes every 2 months with a specific cut of meat, fish, fowl or game being the focus of each menu. The Tickell is also a traditional country pub with wood burning stoves, great real ales and a very well considered wine list.
The Tickell Arms is a former coaching inn which was transformed into a country pub/restaurant in the 1960's by the flamboyant Kim Tickell. With it's striking blue exterior, eclectic and eccentric decor and service it gained a level of notoriety. Kim Tickell passed away in 1991 and afterwards the building lost a lot of its lustre & appeal. It had been closed 2 years before we undertook a major refurbishment to restore it to something approaching its former glory.

The quality of the food at The Tickell Arms is consistently good whether for lunch, Sunday lunch or an evening meal. In addition to its regular menu there are 2 or 3 course set meal offerings as well as specials. The service is always friendly and efficient. For all these reasons I have booked The Tickell Arms to host my 60 something guests at my forthcoming birthday party. To sit in the conservatory section looking out onto the lovely pond and gardens is a treat and to sit outside on the terrace under a parasol on a warm day is an absolute delight.

Second time back to the Tickle Arms which is nestled in Whittlesford, 15 mins south of Cambridge. Great ambience in the pub/restaurant, with a well thought out and exciting menu. Staff very attentive and very keen to ensure the meal and experience is enjoyable.

The Tickell is located in the beautiful village of Whittlesford. We were warmly welcomed and had a lovely table in the large conservatory area. There was a wonderful fire and we were given ample time to enjoy our wine and relax. There was a good choice of dishes, the portions were more than adequate and truly delicious. We will definitely return to the Tickell and highly recommend it to others.

This was our 6th or 7th time at The Tickell. As ever the fish was the star. We both ate from the daily changing fish specials; scallops, cod and mackerel on this occasion. It was all great. Service was friendly. Ambience is good in bar and restaurant. Recommended.

We have eaten here fairly often but always a week day. We have never had a problem with the week but eating lunch on a Saturday was not a wonderful experience. Service slow and a very noisy restaurant with lots of children. Mid week is far more relaxing.

The Tickell has been run for a few years now by the same folk as the Cambridge Chop House, The St John's Chop House and other outposts. They share similar menus and wine lists - nothing wrong in that, as they all share high-quality ingredients and an emphasis on hefty southern French wines. The Tickell is a bit different, as its main building is an early nineteeth-century dwelling with "Gothick" touches, modernised and smartened up and linked with a handsome new-build conservatory which overlooks an idyllic small garden, complete with pond and fountain. The staff are young, eager and helpful, and lend charm to what could be have been a slightly sterile environment. If you want to just drink at the bar, fine: half the place still operates as a pub. But better, settle down near a roaring fire and enjoy the exceptional country-style fish, meat and game dishes - all perfect for Sunday lunch, or indeed for any other occasion!

This was my first visit to the Tickell. Did not like the long bus seat like bench or the very tiny wooden tables in front of it. The service was good but the food was far below what we expected. Would I return, I don't think so.
