   Having eaten at The Star Inn the City twice now my verdict is that it is hit and miss. We had a really special evening meal there that we were really happy with, and returned for a lunch that was ‘ok’ at best. The Star Inn serves modern British food with a decent amount of seasonal and local ingredients. It does some things very well - a dish of Stonebass with a spectacular veloute sauce was truly sensational. On the other hand other things underwhelmed- a decent fish cake served with a sauce which had been left to sit long enough to form a skin and, worse of all, a duck breast served lukewarm and overcooked and then returned to us reheated under a lamp so that it was now so overcooked that it was almost impossible to cut with a knife. To be fair, they comped the duck when we complained, but it still kills the mood when one member of the party’s meal is ruined. In summary, you can have some great food here if you choose right and are lucky, but when you are paying £300 for a meal for four people you’re entitled to expect a bit more consistency.

   I originally booked for a Sunday roast which I didn’t realise they stopped serving at 4pm! The staff was lovely and and the food was very nice! But I honestly think the value of the food is extortionate for the amount of food you get on the plate! We paid £54 for sausage and mash which I think is very expensive.

   Went for Sunday lunch, lovely place, great service, food nicely cooked and presented but one slice of beef for £28 seemed a bit mean

   A large group in The River room made for a very noisy start to our dining experience. Fortunately they left not long in to our starter course. Otherwise it wouldn't have been a pleasant meal

   Nice brunch. Some people arrived after us and were served first. But drinks arrived quickly after them. Coffees very small

    Very disappointing food, mostly fried, and with very unpleasant sauces that tasted synthetic. Music very loud.
