The restaurant industry, by the numbers
The State of the Industry dashboard leverages OpenTable’s global network of more than 60,000 restaurants and millions of diners to provide a high-level snapshot of dining demand compared to 2023. If using data from the dashboard, please cite OpenTable and link back to this site. We have updated our methodology as of June 2024 to show seated diners from online reservations only. All other changes are reflected in the methodology section below.

Methodology
The State of the Industry looks at YoY change in seated diners from online reservations for all restaurants active on the OpenTable platform during the selected time period, comparing the same day of the same week in 2024 to the same day of the same week in 2023 (not the same date). For example, we’d compare Tuesday of week 11 in 2024 to Tuesday of week 11 in 2023 and include data from all restaurants active on OpenTable each day. The data is provided for regions or metros with 50+ restaurants on the OpenTable network. For the displayed datasets, percentages are rounded down. The methodology for the prior iteration of the dashboard (live from April 2023 – April 2024) reflected online, phone, and walk-in reservations, looking at same store restaurants (active OpenTable restaurants that were also on the platform the same time the prior year).
Change in seated diners by week, 2024 vs. 2023
This graph measures the weekly change in seated diners from online reservations for 2024 vs. 2023. Hover over any given date to see how 2024 compares to the respective week in 2023. For example, in the US on the week ending on February 15, 2024, seated diners were up 2% compared to the respective week of the year in 2023.
Change in seated diners by month / day, 2024 vs. 2023
This table measures the volume of seated diners from online reservations on a daily/monthly basis in 2024 vs. 2023. For example, in Los Angeles on January 8, 2024, seated diners were up 7% compared to 2023. In the monthly view, data for the current month shows the YoY change in seated diners for the month-to-date. For example, if the date is January 10, 2024, the data compares January 1 – 10, 2024 to the same range in 2023.
