About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Innovative
Turn the corner from Cross Street and find this striking and iconic red-brick building which dates back to 1872 and promises good food, good beer, and a great atmosphere. Sam's has a history which spans a staggering three centuries… and we've managed to retain a large part of that history inside.
The cuisine mirrors our heritage, with classic British dishes such as mouth-watering corned beef hash cake, or homemade steak and kidney pudding made with fresh lamb's kidneys. Other dishes have been given a modern twist, hence the comparison to Mrs Beeton for the 21st Century, try our roasted pork fillet, served with purple sprouting broccoli, a sweet apple grain mustard purée & a savoury pig jowl hash brown.
Fine wines are one of the things which set Sam's and our other chop houses apart. The wine list has been judged Manchester's best in many of the city's Food & Drink festivals of the last decade. Compiled and constantly updated by our wine buyer and sommelier George Bergier.

A recent addition to the bar is a life-sized bronze statue of the famous Northern artist L.S. Lowry, who was a regular. He sits quietly, propping up the bar in the spot favoured by the man himself, casting a watchful eye over the customers who come through the door. He has been quite the celebrity, being photographed constantly and yet remaining unfazed by all the attention. Come and take a picture with him – he won"t mind! Lowry's presence has put Sam's firmly on the map as the quintessentially British restaurant in Manchester and is a constant reminder of the history behind the chop houses.

This is a great looking pub on the inside, full of character and history. The service is good and the menu is traditional to the Chop House. However, the Sunday Roast was disappointing....especially the Beef. Too pink and too chewy! The gammon was the best part of that roast lunch. Would come again but choose something different! Have dined at Thomas's Chop House and it's always been great!

I have been to Sam's many times when visiting Manchester. Every time it has been great. Food is gastro pub style of high quality and the pub area is a good place to meet for drinks.

I took my wife out for a Birthday meal. We had lots of options in Manchester. The menu looked good on line so we booked Sam's Chop House. We were not disappointed. The Food was first class and the service very good. We will definitely go there again.

Went here on Wednesday evening after a recommendation from a friend. The food was very good and the service was very good also. The staff were helpful and polite at all times. The atmosphere was poor, on a Wednesday evening though, and there was no drinks menu which made ordering drinks at the start of the meal hard, unless you drink wine. The sticky Toffee pudding is fantastic

If you are looking for good old fashioned food at reasonable prices, you would be hard pressed to beat this venue. There are no twists or surprises, no invention or 'fusion' - just fish & chips (or pudding) or bacon and cabbage and the like. Having had several drinks I had the corned beef cake (like a fish cake but corned beef ash) and it was perfect for soaking up the alcohol. The service was friendly - although I think a 10% service charge was uncalled for as it was just 6 of us - we would have happily left a tip and it would have been over 10% due to rounding up as the bill was split between 3 couples - it should be a choice. That said, it was lovely food in pleasant surroundings - next time basic, unpretentious food is called for, we will be back.

We booked a table for 5pm after the afternoon matinee at the Royal Exchange Theatre. The restaurant is handy, almost across the road from the theatre. Slightly more difficult to find due to the major tram works taking place. We had to push through the drinkers at the bar to access the nice restaurant at the rear of the building. We both had the house special Corned Beef Hash for the main course which was nicely presented and enjoyable as was the rest of the food ordered. We felt the wine prices were excessive but not being regular Manchester diners we have no comparisons to make. Overall a pleasant evening.

Recently we dined at Sam jo's Chop house...and had a great experience...Initially we thought , it is just a traditional pub...but after we descended the a short flight of stairs and passed the pub area...a very different and totally new ambience and atmosphere welcomed us along with Great Lowrie. It has friendly hustle and bustle, laughter and chuckles not to mention appetizing aromas of food preparations, tinkle of wine glasses, the glaze of tiles and lights from the walls..and ceiling ...it all sort of uplifts your hunger and energy. I would definitely go again...to try out more of the dishes...i am always on the go for new recipes and tastes. So Why not at Sam Jo's? For all those who love to relish rather than just eat their food.... Sma Jo's is the place.

I just cant get enough of the food at Sam's chophouse. Good quality British food, large portions & home-made desserts that will make your belly explode!! Service was good, with just the right amount of checking up on how we were doing, without being intrusive & knowledgable about the ingrediants on the menu. Highly recommend a visit
