About this restaurant

  • Great for outdoor dining
  • Innovative
  • Romantic
Rita's on the Riverwalk has long been known to San Antonio locals as "The Place we Bring our Friends from Out of Town," and for good reason. Located on the banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk -- walking distance from popular attractions such as the Alamo, Rivercenter Mall, Hemisfair Park, and the H. B. Gonzalez Convention Center -- Rita's boasts a bright, festive atmosphere, ample outdoor seating on our patio and in our courtyard, and plenty of room for larger parties.

Now under new management and with an upgraded menu, Rita's is once again serving the finest fajitas and Tex-Mex cuisine in San Antonio, made from scratch with the best available ingredients. Of course, no Tex-Mex meal on the Riverwalk would be complete without a margarita, and Rita's has its guests covered there, as well. We serve the freshest, coldest, most inventive margaritas on the Riverwalk!

Why are they on OpenTable when they say they don’t take reservations? Go somewhere else. Food is not that great and overpriced.

Some of the best food I have had in San Antonio. My partner and I went about mid day on Monday and were immediately seated. Chips and salsa were great. I got the beef enchilada plate and my partner got the taco plate. Both of which were amazing. I do not recall the name of our server but she did not let our drinks go empty and was very welcoming. I definitely recommend this place and will be going back myself.

First surprise was staff at front had no idea about making reservations on Open Table and were not showing anything on their tablets. It was early for dinner so plenty of tables were available so they were able to seat me. I was anticipating I'd have to contact Open Table about the reservation (i.e. explain that I did actually show up) but the reservation did somehow get credited to my account. Place has a very limited menu for entree's . Suspect people mostly come here for drinks on the river and appetizers. The fajitas were ok but nothing special about them that would make me come back to have again. Mediocre. Place has good location on river for people watching but that's about it.

FAQs

Rita's on the River is described as bright and festive with a lively Riverwalk vibe. The casual dining Tex‑Mex concept emphasizes social, energetic dining, think margaritas, fajitas made from scratch, and outdoor patio or courtyard seating with river views. It’s positioned as a welcoming spot to bring friends or visitors, especially if you’re exploring downtown San Antonio and want a colorful, convivial meal.

Yes, families do visit Rita's on the River. The casual Tex‑Mex menu focus (fajitas, margaritas) and roomy patio and courtyard make it a good spot for family groups and visiting guests. There’s no menu data indicating a kids’ menu or specific children’s offerings, so if you’re bringing young children or need high chairs, call ahead to confirm what accommodations and menu flexibility the kitchen can provide.

Yes, Rita's highlights ample outdoor seating on both a patio and in a courtyard along the Riverwalk. Outdoor seating is a core feature of the restaurant’s Riverwalk experience, ideal for enjoying margaritas, fajitas, and the riverside atmosphere. If you have a seating preference (patio vs. courtyard) or accessibility needs for outdoor seating, call ahead to confirm availability for your visit.

The restaurant lists these hours: Monday–Thursday 11:00 am–10:00 pm, and Friday–Saturday 11:00 am–11:00 pm. Sunday hours are not provided, so if you plan a Sunday visit, call ahead or check the restaurant's current postings online to confirm holiday or weekend schedules. Arrive earlier in the evening if you prefer a quieter table or to enjoy the Riverwalk views at sunset.

For a quieter visit, choose a weekday (Monday–Thursday). The restaurant’s weekday hours and Riverwalk location make early evenings during the week a good bet for a more relaxed table and easier seating. If you want the full lively Riverwalk energy and later hours, Friday or Saturday evenings will be busier and more festive, but expect more crowds and potentially longer waits.

The restaurant lists a formal dress code, but its dining style is described as casual dining. To balance both notes, many guests opt for smart‑casual attire when visiting the Riverwalk location, neat, comfortable clothing suitable for an evening out. If you have a specific dress requirement or plan a special event, it’s a good idea to call ahead and confirm the restaurant’s current dress expectations.

Yes, Rita's on the River can be a lively, riverside choice for date night. The Riverwalk location, bright festive atmosphere, patio and courtyard seating, and a signature margarita program make for a fun, casual evening out. Expect classic Tex‑Mex fare like upgraded fajitas and inventive margaritas. Note that some guests have raised concerns about reservations and value, so consider an early seating or call ahead for the best spot and to confirm current offerings.

The best time is typically weekday afternoons or early evenings when the Riverwalk is quieter; weekdays (Mon–Thu) tend to be calmer than weekend nights. Because Rita's is right on the Riverwalk and close to major attractions, weekends, especially Friday and Saturday evenings, are likely busier and more tourist-driven. If you prefer a relaxed table or patio seating, aim for an early dinner on a weekday and call ahead to check current crowd patterns.
