About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Charming
Compère Lapin - noun - "kom-pare la-pan" - 1. anthropomorphic rabbit character who served as the mischievous protagonist in Creole and Caribbean folk tales; 2. Chef Nina Compton's restaurant at the Old No 77 Hotel & Chandlery in the Warehouse Arts District of New Orleans.

Meals aren’t about trends, shock value, or opulence.
Meals are about moments, memories and those who surround you at your table.
We believe in the complexity of simplicity, and the power of pure flavors. Our histories, vast and varied, deserve to be memorialized and romanticized by dishes that at once remind us of home and transport us to somewhere new.

We don’t make food for everyone else, we make food for you.

From the OpenTable editors: At Compère Lapin, James Beard Award-winning chef Nina Compton dazzles with showstopping dishes that marry her Caribbean heritage and French fine dining pedigree. Dig into favorites like goat curry and broiled shrimp with Calabrian chili butter in a stylish space dressed with exposed brick and warm woods. Don’t miss award-winning cocktails like The Copper Hopper—a tropical, tequila-forward drink served in a copper bunny mug, a nod to the restaurant’s namesake folklore rabbit.

Executive chef: Nina Compton

Every time I come to New Orleans I will always come here! The food is amazing and the service is wonderful. You really feel the thought that goes into each dish, how it is presented, and served. The portions are perfect and I am throughly convinced that each dish is brought to your table at a specific time from when you finished your last dish. I love how the menu has different dishes each time I come, it really makes for a tasteful experience, and I get to try new foods that I would have never thought of trying before. I recommend Compère Lapin to anyone who comes to New Orleans.

Compere Lapin continues to uphold its high level of excellence. The biscuits were as fine as ever, the preparations of the tuna and the salad were imaginative and for me attractively spicey, and the Ital stew made also a spicy change of pace from my favorite curried goat. All portions were generous. The Chateuneuf du Pape was well worth the price, Fran's service was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. I look forward to my next visit.

We were recommended by friends to eat here and they did not steer us wrong. This was one of the best overall dining experiences I’ve had. The wait staff was superb, our waters were never empty, and Michael was so knowledgeable and friendly. We tried so many dishes and were blown away by the flavors. Thank you so much!

Hostess was terrible. I’ll leave it at that. Biscuits were fluffy with bacon honey butter, shrimp was bland. Fish okay but not sure if there was any side dish under it as described. Service was good. 4% kitchen add to price which is ok if the food was good. Thought I’d try a new place but won’t go back. Was hoping for so much more

I selected the "feed me" option. My wife and I had the opportunity to taste majority of the menu options. The food was cooked perfectly. The cocktails were great. I will return

Compere Lapin delivered a dining experience that was worth every bit of the wait. I have been trying to get a reservation here for the past three years, ever since learning about Chef Nina Compton in early 2020, just a month before the COVID shutdown, during a Black History Month event in Seattle alongside Chef Edouardo Jordan of JuneBaby. Both are James Beard Award–winning chefs, and that moment stayed with me. Securing a solo seat on this trip felt rare, and it absolutely lived up to the anticipation. I chose the “just feed me” tasting option, which was the perfect way to experience the range of the menu. Each dish was thoughtfully composed, balanced, and full of flavor. What stood out most was the cultural reverence woven throughout the meal, a seamless fusion of her St. Lucian roots and her chosen home of New Orleans. It did not feel like a blend for the sake of creativity, but rather a grounded expression of identity, memory, and place. Dining solo can sometimes feel rushed or overlooked, but that was not the case here. The experience felt intentional, welcoming, and unrushed. If you appreciate food that tells a story with clarity and care, Compere Lapin is worth planning ahead for.
