About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
The ffrost Sawyer Tavern is located in the beautiful and historic Three Chimneys Inn. The Tavern, with its open hearth Summer Kitchen fireplace, granite walls, and hand-hewn beams, provides a cozy spot for hearty traditional New England fare. The Tavern is a popular dining spot for local guests and travelers. The Maples Dining Room features millwork dating to 1699 and retains the original Indian shutters that protected settlers from Colonial-era attacks. Coppers, the original winter kitchen of the 1649 homestead, provides an elegant and romantic setting. Wide plank floors, the open hearth and original millwork create an authentic old New England dining experience.

Our culinary team prepares savory dishes from scratch with exceptional, homegrown flavor. The kitchen works closely with local farms and growers to pick fresh ingredients for creative entrees and innovative cocktails, resulting in exceptional farm-to-table cuisine that showcases the essence of New Hampshire.

Dinner experience was great. Food was wonderful, not run of the mill, with extra touches that made it surprising and fabulous. And the prices are much lower than the Portsmouth prices that we’re used to. Be back soon!

We went here for Restaurant Week , when you would expect restaurants to put forward their best to get new customers to return. First - the drinks were excellent. My husband had the espresso martini - 2 of them1 and I had the Creamsicle - really good. Appetizers - Salad was very good, as was the fried brussel spouts. If we stopped right here we would have been happy and if you go for drinks and apps everything will be just fine -but Entree - We both ordered the swordfish. It came prefrozen, cooked from frozen, and absolutely hammered. To make up for that, the asparagus was raw. Not tendercrisp, raw. Dessert- I got the limoncello cake. Not too bad, slightly reminicent of childrens aspirin. My husband got the chocolate mousse, which was simply chocolate whipped cream, not mousse at all. We haven't been to this restaurant for several years, but remembered it as excellent, so this was a big let down. Sorry we couldn't give it a better review.

Portsmouth Restaurant Week three $42 Three-Course Meal options to choose from. I enjoyed the Summer Berry Salad, Pesto Tortellini, and Limoncello Cake. Service was perfectly timed through the dinner being served, but there was quite a bit of a wait between finishing dinner, and the dessert being served. It is a tavern, so noise level was acceptable as such. I would not mind going again, for their regular menu.

Sadly, we were very underwhelmed with our dinner last night at the Three Chimney’s Inn. To start my wife’s clam chowder had too much tarragon which took away from the taste the chowder. They should’ve called it tarragon soup. My wife’s swordfish, undercooked, jasmine rice, undercooked asparagus undercooked. To end her meal my wife ordered a gluten-free chocolate sorbet, which she said if you close your eyes, you couldn’t tell what it was because there was no taste to the ice cream. I ordered a NY strip steak medium rare but it was rare. Our waitress was very attentive, apologetic, and she did comp my wife’s meal but there was no manager to be found to take accountability for our time. We even booked our reservation early in the evening to avoid any rush on the kitchen, but their eye was not on the ball with our meal. Hopefully, management and the head chef will do better.

First time here. We were going to sit upstairs but decided to check out the tavern before dinner and there we stayed. Great vibe, food and service. The staff is extremely friendly and want to make sure you enjoy. We will be back!
