In May 2016 the community of South Stoke was presented with the opportunity to bring the Packhorse pub back under local ownership. The response to the scheme was overwhelming, and in March 2018, this C17th building – the sole pub in the village of South Stoke re-opened as a Freehouse, with all its original character in tact.
We serve beautiful fresh food from a state of the art kitchen from a team of chefs with a great pedigree in cooking. Our menu is made up of great British classic dishes and some with more modern twists, seasonality and simplicity is the theme, we are perfect for lunch dinner and special occasions.
Our fully landscaped garden shows off some stunning views of this quite wonderful countryside, truly breathtaking.

Parking at the pub and in the village is quite limited but there is a lovely short walk into the village from the main Midford Rd

Fantastic to sit outside the best pub in the world for the first time since it reopened. Food was really good as was the beer and the ambience was unbeatable, of course.

This is a great place with a lovely atmosphere . The pub has been beautifully restored very unostentatiously and the garden is delightful. Sunday roasts were delicious and the service very friendly.

We had a lovely late Sunday lunch with very good customer service. The roasts were very good but the puddings were shop-bought and not good value.

Enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast with family. Great quality food and a lovely atmosphere in a fantastic, traditional pub filled with history. Service was very friendly.

A beautifully restored old building with good food and friendly staff. Service, on a busy Friday evening, was a little slow, but I was given a table in a quiet corner as I had requested.
