About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
Dining at The Old Deanery is an immersive experience, and you move through the building as you dine. Arrive into the cosy welcome lounge for pre-dinner drinks; chat, get comfortable, and relax – there will be no classical piano and hushed tones in here! Move through to the bar where you can watch some of the chefs work before they invite you to take your first course. The main event takes place in the restaurant, but forget white tablecloths and stilted service; the food may be formal but the atmosphere is not. Finally, you can retire after dinner to a cosy chair and enjoy a coffee and petits fours. Stay the night and enjoy views of either the lovely garden, or striking Cathedral. Then wake to a home-made breakfast board of granola, yoghurt, continental bites, and cooked goodness: A breakfast with a difference and the best way to sign off your stay.

Had afternoon tea which was very expensive for what we got, 3 sandwiches, 1 small belini, 1 scone with barely enough jam and cream to share, a very small chocolate mousse (probably the nicest thing sweet thing we ate) a shop bought tiny macaroon, a bun thing with cracklan top with jam and some sort of cream stuff seeping from the bottom (it was tasteless) and a finger of cheesecake with red jelly on top which could have been any flavour and left a metallic taste in your mouth. My friend and I take afternoon tea all over - it’s our hobby and I can honestly say this was one of the worst and at £39 per head extortionate!

We had a lovely meal overall at this restaurant. The food was good, with a few small hiccups. The starter—a trout roulade—was absolutely delicious and a great way to begin the meal. For the main, I had the roast, which was tasty, though the Yorkshire pudding was unfortunately a bit overdone and quite dark. The roast potatoes were nice, but could have been better—my husband actually does them better at home! I prefer a crispier texture. For dessert, the bread and butter pudding was a standout—rich, comforting, and perfectly done (although I do wonder if it had alcohol in ? which I specifically asked for there to be no alcohol in any of my food). The Eton mess, I’ve had far tastier and was a rather small portion. One thing I really appreciated was that they were accommodating with our dog, which is always a bonus. ⸻ One thing I really appreciated was that they were accommodating with our dog, which was great, and we were able to be seated indoors when there wasn’t space outside. Service-wise, the woman with the shaved head was absolutely lovely—warm, chatty, and genuinely welcoming. In contrast, the gentleman serving us was polite but came across as a bit standoffish. He wasn’t unfriendly, but there just wasn’t much warmth or engagement, which stood out—especially in a setting that feels like it’s aiming for a higher-end experience. If I were at a triple rosette or Michelin-starred restaurant, I’d expect the service to be a cut above, and his approach felt more middle-of-the-road. All in all, a good meal in a nice setting, with room for some small improvements both in food execution and consistency in service.

Excellent 3 course Sunday lunch for special occasion. Delicious soft pink sirloin beef and cauliflower cheese etc. Trout starter and rhubarb Eton mess very tasty too. Let down by late service of drinks. Ordered proseccos to toast my birthday, which didn't arrive until we'd finished bread and starters and had to chase up. Service otherwise good but hardly worthy of 12.5% service charge.

What a great experience, taster menu was amazing. The service was fantastic from the very start. The first course at the chief counter was a nice touch. Will definitely be back.

We had Sunday lunch at the Old Deanery and I cannot fault it. The room we were seated in was full yet I was impressed that it wasn’t overly noisy - I could hold a conversation yet wasn’t bothered by the conversations of others. From the off, the staff were attentive, warm and friendly. I had my baby with me… I was a little reserved about bringing him out for lunch but they made me feel at ease and welcomed him, too. The food was excellent. I think £40 for a set menu of the quality we experienced is exceedingly good value and we’ll be coming back. I also appreciated that this isn’t a “pile it high” style of roast dinner experience. The portions were very generous so you won’t leave hungry, but they were refined… I think this is what sets it apart from other venues. We will definitely be visiting again; and I particularly want to come for breakfast, too!

Had sunday lunch. 4 people all really enjoyed it. Restaurant was quiet and warm (only 2 degrees outside ) esp given it was a very okd building. Staff lovely and attentive. My main could have been hotter if I am honest.
