About this restaurant

  • Good for groups
  • Romantic
The Mulberry Tree is a contemporary country restaurant and bar with a relaxed, informal atmosphere, excellent food, wine and service. It is set in the beautiful Kent countryside, only 4 miles from Staplehurst and has been extended and modernised to offer a restaurant and bar seating 75. There is also a sunny terrace and garden for al fresco dining. The restaurant won Kent Restaurant of the Year in 2008 & 2009, was voted the South East Regional Restaurant of the Year, Good Food Guide 2010, is featured in the 2010 Michelin Guide and has been awarded two AA Rosettes.
The cuisine style is "modern British & European' using seasonal, free-range and organic produce that is sourced from local suppliers from within The Weald of Kent, in what really is The Garden of England. The philosophy is to offer value for money, using only the best ingredients.
There is an extensive wine list that includes many New World wines from smaller vineyards.

We had been given a Groupon Voucher for this restaurant. Unfortunately we were unaware that the restaurant can only claim 20% of the value of the voucher. For this reason you are asked to inform the restaurant of this on arrival, so that you can be given an inferior menu. Due to my lack of foresight I had overlooked the “small print” and ordered food from the normal menu. I corrected my error soon after by asking a student waiter if it was ok. He then took it away, and my wife could see quite clearly that the manageress was not at all pleased. However she did not say anything to us until seconds before our order arrived. We felt so embarrassed and belitted at being treated in such an unprofessional manner. She was quite forceful and not at all pleasant. She never smiled and we felt very hurt by her attitude. We paid for the wine we ordered and left. Hence they Indicated that we had not showed up! If the restaurant is struggling so much then perhaps using Groupon is detrimental to the business.

If you were to judge this restaurant on it's food alone you would say it was very good. Not the best I've ever eaten but one I would be happy to enjoy again and again. The ragout of beef starter is exceptional and the confit of duck main was equally very good although just a tad more jus would have been good. But the service lacked something, it was very personable and maybe a little snobbish. This after all is a country restaurant but lacked that cosy welcoming feeling.

If you care where your food is sourced ... as local as possible ... this is the restaurant for you. Excellent well prepared food and the option of matching with English wine. Friendly service and great ambience.

The restaurant is off the beaten track and it's almost an adventure finding it which just adds to the evening. The food was amazing and priced very reasonably and the fact it's locally sourced makes it all the better. My girlfriend had steak which was so tender it literally melted in your mouth, the only criticism I would have is that for the price yuu would expect a few vegetables on the side which we thought did come with the meal, but I had ample so shared. I had a rack of lamb which was one of the best I've ever had and couldn't fault at all. The atmosphere was superb and the staff very attentive but out the way which. Is perfect when trying to have a romantic meal.. All in all 5 stars!!

Although located along a single track road the Mulberry Tree experience is well worth the 'hairy' approach. The comprehensive and well balanced Menu will, without doubt, suit all tastes and the extensive wine list, sensibly priced, compliments this fine menu.. Dishes are beautifully prepared and equally well presented. The young, uniformed, pleasant and very efficient staff unobtrusively tending to diners needs with a smile is a major contributor to the sense of wellbeing at the Mulberry Tree. The quality of the food was excellent and it is not surprising that the restaurant was nigh on fully booked. A real pleasure. .

We chose to go to the Mulberry Tree following a Google search and due to the reviews and ratings. It was a birthday treat for our daughter and a treat for her Grandmother which involved a one hour drive, so we were anxious that it lived up to the reviews. The access was good, the atmosphere was relaxed, the weather was lovely and the food and wine were delicious. The service was polite, efficient but relaxed with nothing being a problem. We had a table inside but when we requested to move outside for the dessert it was no problem. All in all a lovely afternoon and we will return.
