The Monocle is the closest restaurant to the Capitol building, United States Senate and Union Station. Established in 1960, The Monocle is not only known as a Washington institution, but also for its fine American cuisine-served by a professional and friendly team of servers. You can always count on being served great crab-cakes, grilled fresh fish, prime steaks and chops, while enjoying the powerful political scenery. The private Federal Room is a Washington classic for private parties and political fundraisers. The Wine Room is a cozy room for your intimate private birthday dinner of six to ten. Cheers!

This is a wonderful restaurant in a lovely colonial-style building. The service was attentive and the cocktails / meals were excellent. My partner had the sirloin cooked to perfection and I enjoyed the large crabcake. It’s a short walk from Union Station.

One of our favorite places to eat in DC. Food and drinks are reasonably priced and you never know who you may see come in the restaurant!

We were early because we wanted to beat an approaching storm. The manager said that’s ok, that’s why we are in the hospitality business. We stayed late to let the storm pass. No problem. Staff adroitly handled family with several small children seated nearby. It has been a too-long while since I have enjoyed the Monocle. It is still superior. As was the calves liver. Excellent all around. Bravo.

Historic spot next to Senate Office Buildings with signed photos of political figures throughout. Crab cake was huge and delicious. Fun people watching but service a bit slow at times to refill water and bring second round of drinks.

First off, the pork chop was gorgeous - succulent, and full of flavour, with a delicious sauce and accompanying vegetables. A crab and avocado starter was pretty good. The salmon main was *really* poor: overcooked to the point of being hard, shrivelled and dry. If it hadn’t been smothered in a palatable sauce it would have been inedible. Service a bit hit and miss too. One server was charm itself; the other a bit less so. It was a first to be asked which bottle of wine we wanted to buy from a wine list before getting the chance to see the food menu, and one of our side plates looked like it could do with another trip through soapy water before being put on a clean table. Not everyone will appreciate being clapped on the shoulder - on two occasions - as an expression of avuncular bonhomie from a server given these issues, and at one point he seemed to be arguing with customers on another table, but his recommendation to have the pork done medium went a long way because it was absolutely the right advice. We hadn’t intended to complain but, when we were asked how the meal had been, had to honestly reply the meal was mixed. We were offered a dessert and after dinner drinks on the house (on account of the salmon being so disappointing) and this was appreciated. Overall this is a place worth considering and the impression we got is that they aim to please, and can produce some wonderful food, but perhaps not reliably. If you like pork, do go, and there were lots of other diners there who seemed to enjoy this popular place. For our part, we would probably try somewhere else next time we are in town.
