   We turned up for a 19.30 booking only to find I had booked it for 07.30. As it was close to Christmas the restaurant was fully booked. This caused a bit of fun and we were prepared to go to another restaurant, but luckily for us someone had not turned up so we were given their table. The service, food and ambiance was first class as usual and we had a very pleasant evening.

   The Goring dining room is elegant fine dining with a delightful ambience which justly deserves its Michelin Star. The cooking was imaginative and elicited wonderful flavours. A marvellous place for a special occasion.

   We arrived at the restaurant at about 7.15pm and left at around 9.15pm ; during that time we were served two courses, not counting a small (and tasteless) amuse bouche. We started with a hotel speciality- Eggs Drumkilbo. It read well on the menu but when it arrived it was essentially a small helping of shredded crab. For the two of us, that came to £60. ! The main course (when it arrived) was excellent, but by that time we just wanted to leave. Overall, including the usual gross mark up on wine, we spent £275. Very poor value.

   My husband and I attended the Goring restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We found it to be very much a hotel restaurant, not much fun,stuffy atmosphere . We started with cocktails in the bar which took a good 20 minutes to arrive. Mine was a rather watery spritzer, apparently rose flavoured. Our starter it was tasty but very small. Note: Orkney scallop means one Orkney scallop, £24. We then had to wait about 20 minutes for our main courses to arrive, by which time we were pretty hungry.The main courses were very good, guineafowl and lamb. Service was adequate, nor exceptional.. Our main issue was with the sommelier who seemed offhand and focused more on what in his view went best with my husband’s lamb rather than what might work with my choice of guineafowl. Contrary to his strong guidance towards a red wine, we chose a Chassagne Montrachet ,which should have been rich and complex but was disappointingly “ thin” and was served chilled. We had to ask the sommelier to take it out of the ice bucket. When we said we were disappointed with the wine we were told that it was as it should be. We were not trying to score a discount but were made to feel that this was our objective. This won’t be a memorable meal for us.

   When we arrived, they told us our reservation had been cancelled, but the only email I received was a confirmation mail. Even though, we got a table and both service and food were excellent. Price was too expensive, but the overall experience was very good. As a suggestion, we think smashed potatoes with meat as a side plate for the Beef Wellington wasn’t a good choice. Everything was delicious, but a fresh salad or sautéed vegetables would be more appropriate, as the main plate was already composed with protein and carbo, so fibers would be better to complement.

   Lunch on an August Thursday was very quiet. Staff excellent, mains were good, strawberry parfait was outstanding! It is a lovely room.

   Unfortunately the food, although beautifully presented, lacked the wow taste factor and we think our main waiter was either having an off day or it was just how he was. He didn’t smile, seemed overworked and rushed which was such a shame. It didn’t live up to my expectations at all, to the point where I actually checked afterwards that they did have a Michelin star!
