About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
Edinburgh’s oldest ‘gastropub’ The Doric is also among its very finest. Dating back to the 18th century, this Market Place favourite has served locally sourced food and remains true to its roots to this very day, offering Scotland’s most celebrated dishes. The Doric’s dining room encloses its diners in claret-tinted warmth, rustic scrubbed floors accompanied by swagged curtains, traditional in décor but without any sign of twee-ness. Likewise the menu balances Scottish tradition with contemporary tastes, changing with culinary fashion without trying too hard to impress. An a la carte menu is complimented by always popular roast dinners and a long list of beers and malts.

Excellent service - from the minute we walked through the door to paying the bill the service was first class.

First time I had been here for food and it was the ideal location for a bite of dinner with friends, so close to Waverley. Great food and lovely atmosphere

Good pub near the railway station in Edinburgh. Very cosy, only issue for us was being forgotten about after we had ordered desserts. Give the staff their due, they did at least apologise, otherwise very enjoyable meal.

Delicious, wholesome food using good ingredients. Fantastic 17c building. Reasonable prices. Very much enjoyed the haggis, shepherd's pie, cheese. Husband had espresso beer. Menu needs grammar checks, misuse of apostrophes- price's -yikes.

Our table was ready for us whenever we arrived. Service throughout was prompt and customer friendly. The wines were all a bit pricey (the American Pinot Grigio was pretty awful but the Pinotage was excellent). The highlight of the evening was definitely the food, both in terms of quality and quantity. The Cullen Skink was first-class, traditionally done, as it should be! The tiger prawn linguine was blessed with a barrow-load of these excellent prawns. The carpaccio starter and the sea bass main were also very good and plentiful. The two steak options were overly priced, so we didn't even consider them. The choice of puddings was an unimaginative disappointment. Despite having thrown in those negatives, our evening out was a success with the positives in the shape of the quality and quantity of the food far outweighing the negatives. We will certainly return.
