The Chequers in Stevenage is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Dating back to 1774, The Chequers was originally used as a farmhouse on a 40 acre farm which included a slaughterhouse. Taken over by the St. Albans brewer in 1820, by 1871 the grounds also included a lodge, a thatch barn and a cattle barn. Granted its full license in 1919, The Chequers is now also a grade two listed building.

Dating to 1774, The Chequers is a listed building, originally a farmhouse, and today there are still many woodland walks to explore in the area addition to historic treats to visit such as Knebworth House.

    Complete turn around from previous visit it’s like a different place I assume there are new people running it now but fabulous little country pub on the fringe of St Evenage

    One dinner came 10 minutes later than the others, and it was a salad! The chicken tasted burnt. There wasn't much lettuce or sauce. Very overpriced for what was on my plate. One meal came with mash and chips, after asking just for chips - what a waste of food! The male waiter, whilst we have no complaint, seemed really out of his professional happy comfort zone. It was the chef in the end who brought out the missing meal. We dine out a lot but afraid won't be coming back.

    The chequers was lovely however your reservation didn’t reach them so we had to wait to be seated!!!!

    Booked a table for Sunday lunch. Had a phone call about 11:30 from the restaurant to say they had no tables in the dinning room available so I cancelled. Not much point in using an app like Open Table if it’s not accurate.

    Obviously lacking in staff numbers long delays in courses When food did arrive it was quite good Staff we did have. 2n0 were very good.
