About this restaurant

Located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, TAKOI is known for modern Thai cooking accented with Michigan seasonality, a DIY mentality, and a penchant for local food production. As a core pillar of our mission, TAKOI operates HiO Farm which is located just a mile north of the restaurant. During the height of farm season, the restaurant highlights dishes prepared with HiO produce utilizing the techniques and flavors inspired by Thailand and beyond.


TAKOI, originally KATOI, began as a food truck in 2014, evolved into an Ann Arbor pop-up, and landed as a proper restaurant at 2520 Michigan Avenue in March of 2016. After being open for 11 months, having a slew of fun, and garnering a handful of awards — including a James Beard 'Best New Restaurant' nomination— KATOI was brought back down to earth when it was subjected to arson in February 2017. The day after the fire, the rebuild began, and we opened as TAKOI exactly six months later in August 2017.

The restaurant grows its own produce a mile up the road for dishes like an heirloom tomato salad with chile paste and fried shallots or a killer fried chicken sandwich with papaya salad, served in a colorful, glowing dining room and outdoor patio.

    We loved the food. Loved the male bartender nut the female bartender was very condescending and the only negative but extreme negative as it ruined the experience...if I could have tipped additional and known she wouldn't get half, I would have...but food was great and different from what I expect from Thai food. Needed more heat is all.

    Excellent service and food. We ordered several courses (as recommended ) since we were a small group (4). For starters we ordered Brussels sprouts and the winter roots salad As always, the sprouts were perfectly cooked and the vegetable salad had just the right amount of spices. Our main courses included the crispy spareribs, fried chicken, and spaghetti lad na along with the sticky rice and roti. All were deliciously prepared and cooked-although I would probably ask for the ribs to be cooked more ( if you don’t like pink in them). For dessert, we ordered the coconut milk ice cream sundae that is always a great! The serving sizes as shareables are generous and we even took some ribs and salad home. Always a delight to dine here in a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere.

    This was our second time at Takoi. We had the chef’s tasting. Everything was delicious. The wait staff was great.
