Mi Casa Tu Casa x Homies on Donkeys - A Mexican takeover On Wednesday 14th May, St Johns Tavern will hand over its kitchen and dining room to Leytonstone's Modern Mexican Taqueria - Homies on Donkeys, led by chef Smokey & Sandra Bello. For one night only they'll serve a menu that honours the traditions and convivial spirit spirit of Mexican street food. Dinner runs from 6.30 to 9.30pm and is guided by the rule 'Never put down your Taco' All guests will receive a welcome cocktail on arrival, followed by shared starters, think smoky esquites and guacamole with nopal salad and crispy kale, Guests will then have the chance to build their ownn tacos with signature slow-cooked specialities like rich mole chicken and tangy cochinita pibil. The evening cocludes with a nostalgic chocolate tart drizzeled in warm cajeta. Priced at £68pp, it will be a fun celebration of Mexican culinary heritage, Guests are encouraged to relax, chat, share and maybe a shot of Mezcal to take the edge off!

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch with delicious food and the team was very friendly . The team in the kitchen is great, helped us to choose amazing dishes and beautiful desserts! Highly recommended, we will be back!

The food was exceptional, a big thank you to the kitchen and the head chef Sean. We shared starters and the trout and aubergine salad were amazing. The staff were incredible, particularly Mounir, and Henty were brilliant. Very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back and highly recommend,

Outstanding service! The roasts were delicious- especially the roast potatoes- which is always a sign of great food! The Yorkshire pudding’s could have been hotter but apart from that- excellent!!

Since the last time I went they have changed all the paintings in the main room, which gave the place real character. They have also turned up the lighting. The menu had also changed completely. Now vaguely Middle Eastern/Italian with only one fish option. Good service on a quiet evening - place was about 30% full on a Thursday evening. Excellent jazz in the bar afterwards.

Great service! The individual roasts were a good size, but the sharing suckling lamb advertised for two wasn't really filling, not much meat on the bone. Could've been easily eaten by only one person; it would have been more convenient to order two individual dishes. The sticky toffee pudding was a winner, but the pear dessert was a bit of a steal.. £8 for less than half a pear and a splash of cream.

Enjoyed trying dishes from the new menu! Had the gurnard which was cooked perfectly although found the addition of pickled chillies rather strange! I hadn’t been here for ages but the open fire and music from the jazz trio in the bar area made for a great atmosphere, so planning a return visit soon!
