   We were a little concerned when the Lyft driver dropped us off in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood in front of a seemingly unlabeled building. We verified the address, found the door, stepped inside, and our concerns melted away. Beautiful setup, lots of happy people, delicious food, great sake. The price tag was a bit high but I was expecting that and it was a special occasion. I'm told the "izakaya" label may be a bit of a misnomer but they did have the tapas style dishes and variety of sake options so from a consumption standpoint, it's what we were hoping for.

   I am writing a review after my second visit. I had one of the best meals ever here recently. The food is excellent: creative preparations, fresh and delicious. I do not like conventional potato salad, but Shinmai’s version of it is just remarkable—with slightly pan-fried/roasted baby potatoes and furikake aioli. I’m also a big fan of the mussels in the curry broth. And the ramen is to die for! It’s a great place to share and taste a host of dishes, from the specials to the permanent ones on the menu. I really love this place. My service this time was outstanding; the waiter I had the first time I visited put a shadow on my visit. I’m really glad to have given Shinmai a second chance.

   Second visit, server remembered us, always makes you feel welcome! Food was so good, and so is the service. Has become one of our favorites of Oakland!

   We sat in the back room next to the beautiful painting. There is something wrong with the sound proofing or there is no sound proofing at all... the noise level was so high, we had to literally scream at each other to have a conversation and I had to plug my ears a couple of times because the noise hurt my ears. I did not have this experience sitting in the main room.

   It’s synonymous to when a baseball player hits a long flyball. It’s looks good but it ends up being an ‘out.’ That’s Shinmai in a nutshell. The reviews are great as well as the decor, but it falls flat in food and service. The food was nothing special. The ocean trout was delicious and wonderfully presented but it didn’t make up for the over battered ford okra or the chewy ribeye. Our service was inconsistent and on the slow side. Our server was a bit condescending to my partner which I didn’t appreciate. Overall, it’s a hip vibe that falls flat.
