About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Fancy
For ninety-nine years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1926, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

We went for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the splurge in this historically rich treasure box! The service was welcoming and attentive. The ambiance was opulent and beautiful. The menu offered a variety of options including a special (and expensive) caviar tasting special and an afternoon tea. Our waitress was thoughtful, inviting us to taste wine before ordering and sharing detailed descriptions of menu items to guide our selections. She was also very knowledgeable about the Tea Room’s history. We opted for traditional favorites … borscht with peroshki, beef stroganoff, and baked Alaska along with scallops in butternut squash purée. Everything was nicely presented and delicious! The tea is a highlight to accompany any meal … the tea menu has an outstanding variety of house blended selections, including both caffeinated and herbal decaffeinated varieties. The tea is served in a generous large pot, which I love because it lasts through the meal (I drink a lot of tea). The serving of tea leaves was generous, and the waiter refilled the tea pot with hot water to enjoy during dessert. Cherries in syrup are a fun, traditional, accompaniment to sweeten the tea in addition to usual milk and sugar.

I read a lot of mixed reviews before making the reservation. I'm glad I went ahead and booked it. My husband and I took our daughter for a 11:30 tea before a 2:00 matinee. It was perfect, delicious tea, tasty sandwiches, and overwhelming desserts. It was a ton of food and we ended up having to take almost all of our desserts to go. They packaged everything up neatly and all of the staff was wonderful.

We dined on a Monday night and chose the pre theatre menu. Borscht was excellent, beef stroganoff was tender and a perfect portion size and dessert ( chocolate mousse cake and Ukrainian honey cake) was a generous size and very good. Great ambiance and staff were friendly and highly attentive. Would definitely return.

You can't find a better setting for a relaxing, comfortable dinner. The staff could not have been more attentive and friendly. They thought my drink was taking too long and apologized probably 4 times (it wasn't even that much of a delay). Will definitely be returning on my next trip to the city.
