About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Kid-friendly
  • Innovative
From a relaxing post-walk coffee and cake, to a very special classic dining experience in the stunningly restored formal rooms of the 18th Century mansion, our beautifully-cooked food is served at a price that is fair for everyone from producer to guest. Guests can now enjoy our new restaurant ‘Source’, a ‘farm to fork’ concept which takes advantage of the wonderful array of quality, locally-sourced meats, fish and freshly-grown produce – all from within a twenty mile radius of the House. Serving a seasonal , British menu, Source combines wonderful local produce with an unbeatable ambiance – a newly restored Grade 1 listed country house dating back to 1722, set in acres of unspoilt parkland and Sussex countryside; a peaceful and stylish experience just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the City.

We arrived at Stamner House at 11am and it was closed!!! There was no sign of staff or any sign that it was about to open. There was no indication on its’ website that it was going to be closed on 7 September! We would not consider this place again.

The service presentation was excellent, what let the experience down for me was that the vegetables were served warm and the lamb was fatty and tough, not tender.

When we got there they didn't have our booking even though open table had confirmed. They only had 4 things left on the menu and they couldn't seat us in the dining room. The customer service was ok although there was one extremely helpful girl on front of house.

Food was tasty - even though menu was confusing. We were handed a Sunday lunch menu (set menu of up to 3 courses) and a separate lunch menu. We asked and were told that we could not 'mix and match' between them.... but the table behind us were allowed to. We were also asked to order all 3 courses at the start of the meal... again, other tables were not forced to do this. The service was lacking both in substance and hospitality - staff need to learn to smile! I had soup- not overly hot and no bread to accompany, followed by turkey roast - had to ask for cranberry sauce (which looked exactly the same as the 'jam' used on my sisters starter and dessert). We were very underwhelmed as expected so much more from the beautiful surroundings and majestic building

Couldn’t give no stars which I wanted to do. Very disappointed as booked on line and the booking was not honoured. I was told that they were full even though I had the confirmation email. My friend had come down from London and we were looking forward to it but we went elsewhere where they know how to treat customers. All round a bad experience.

Lost our booking. No corkscrew for wine. Took 15 mins to find one. None of the food on the sunday menu was available. Food on other menu was inedible. Had to send 3 meals back to kitchen e.g. fish was served raw. Manager took a very long time to accept our complaints. Seemed to think the fact there had been a wedding the day before was an ok excuse. Poor waitresses were at their wits end -not their fault. Would not recommend to anyone. What a pity at such a delightful venue.

Sadly they failed to mention that the restaurant was closed when we made the reservation. The manager could not have cared less about the error. We left without an apology.
