About this restaurant

  • Good for groups
  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
At Mulebone we layer regional Southern-American foods, craft cocktails with a pinch of the present in an inviting and curated dining room. Along with some of the best homemade sweet potato bourbon pecan pie, we serve what we like to call modern American cuisine with Southern accents, plus craft American spirits, beer and wine with a small batch bourbon emphasis.

Ingredients are mindfully sourced to meet the demands of a picky aunt, a health warrior, or a vegetarian love interest. We are committed to sustainable practices which means we use local whenever possible and eco-friendly packaging and products.

In collaboration with various community organizations, scholars, artists, authors, we host 'Food & Folklore' events to highlight the cultural and culinary in great style.

The food was excellent and service was friendly, but slow. Beautiful and creative decor, but the buzz of conversations a bit loud. Great for a casual gathering of friends for a great meal.

We went on a Thursday night about 7 and the restaurant had only about 4 tables of people. A few more came during our stay. The drinks tasted watered down. The fried chicken was good but the mac and cheese that came with it was cold. Service was ok but the person who delivered our food did not clear starter plates first so there was no where to set the food. It took a while before our waiter returned to check on things and take a new beverage order.

Dropped in after a lecture on the Great Migration at the Smithsonian. Was surprised at how empty the restaurant was even for late on a Wednesday evening. Service was efficient and friendly. My girlfriend noted that on our last visit we saw Dick Gregory at another table and she regretted that she hadn't walked over to greet him. That became poignant when the comedian died a few days later.

The food was OK--nothing to right home about. The service was good at the beginning, but as more customer came in, we were forgotten. We had to wait 25 minutes just to see the waiter to get the check.

We went for Saturday brunch. We were a little early at 10:30 and the place was pretty empty, but filled up soon after. The food was very good, with generous helpings of potatoes and big, fluffy biscuits. I ordered the bubbly punch which was very good (& strong). I didn't do the bottomless but I would say for the quality of the drinks it is worth the $15. The service was a bit slow, and after the food came out our waitress never came back to check on us, so some of my friends were unable to order drinks since they hadn't ordered them at the beginning. In general it was hard to flag down staff. Overall it was a good brunch experience and I will be back.

Fantastic food and creative beverages. Mulebone was the culinary highlight of my families recent vacation to the D.C. area. If I could make only one recommendation, it would be the catfish; if I could afford it, I would have sampled it all. We ordered quite a few items from the eclectic menu, each just as impressive as the last. I suggest anyone who has the time give this establishment a go.

Great food and drinks with authentic southern flavor. Service was disorganized and inconsistent, like there were still things to be worked out. More than one person took our drink order, which came out wrong. Food wait time was reasonable. Biscuits are amazing, btw. Throughout dinner, service was sparse and we had to flag down other servers. Overall, the food and drinks made it a great brunch.
