About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Great for creative cocktails
Moon Rabbit is a highly-regarded Vietnamese restaurant situated in the heart of Washington D.C., drawing inspiration from the virtuous rabbit depicted in the Buddhist Jataka tale. Led by acclaimed Chef Kevin Tien, the restaurant embodies an innovative approach to Vietnamese cuisine, showcasing a menu that is both unique and complex. Chef Tien's main objective is to pay tribute to his heritage as a first-generation Asian American, using Moon Rabbit as a platform for expressing his love for Vietnamese culture and food.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Kevin Tien

From the OpenTable editors: Come to the Moon Rabbit reboot for chef Kevin Tien’s singular approach to Vietnamese fine dining. In a modern, library-like space, his ambitious menu—think Mực Nhồi Thị (squid-stuffed boudin) and Cá Viên (barbecued monkfish with collard greens)—is both rooted in his Asian heritage and Louisiana upbringing while boundary-pushing, for a singular experience every visit.

Great restaurant, nice set up. Service was friendly and helpful, especially with 2 people of our group that were vegetarian. Food was outstanding with many different levels of texture and fun surprises. I recommend that restaurant without any hesitation.

We had a group of six and got a wonderful table at the back, with a lazy susan for our shared food and relative quiet. The service was excellent; the staff was attentive, responsive to questions and needs, and overall delightful. The food was amazing in its creativity and variety. It is not what you would expect as Vietnamese - not a noodle in sight! We got the chef's menu; the bread and little starter snacks were delicious. There were two appetizers; we found the Waygu beef overdone and not living up to its hype. The other appetizer was excellent. The main courses, of which there were three, were more than we could eat! Pork, quail, and sweet potato gnochi in a rich sauce. The flavors were unusual and marvelous. The desserts were excellent too; there were three, always with an unexpected ingredient, but it all came together beautifully. The chef's menu is for a celebratory or special meal; ordering a la carte would be fun too.

We enjoyed the tasting menu and several cocktails. The tasting menu was quite good; it's a great option if you have decision paralysis like we often do. Everything we had was very tasty and we left very satisfied. Take the cocktail categories seriously- the "Forward and Complex" category is understating itself, if anything. I found the Pho Dac Biet (their take on a dirty martini) quite difficult. Admittedly I'm more of a bourbon drinker but occasionally I like a martini. I did not enjoy this one and frankly I don't think it was the drink's fault. If your palate is ready for something intense, then maybe stray into this category. Otherwise, I'd stick to the others. That said, "Out of Dipping Sauce" and "Rice Rice Baby" were incredible. The only Vietnamese beer on the menu, the Pomelo Pale Ale, was good but tasted like many other pale ales and I couldn't really detect the Pomelo. Service was excellent and the servers/runners were both personable and knowledgeable. They answered any questions and chatted with us about the various dishes and drinks. We will certainly be back again!
