Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Joel Stocks

From the OpenTable editors: One of the New York Times's 50 favorite restaurants of 2024, L'Orange charms with its refined, Pacific Northwest-influenced Mediterranean small plates and superbly curated wine in a homey, cozy atmosphere. The combo quickly captivated local critics and diners, who show up in droves for dishes like roasted garlic soup with grapes or poached and grilled cauliflower with curried granola. It all obviously pairs beautifully with owner Jeff Vejr's large, varied selection.

Philosophy

At L'Orange we hope to transport you back to a time when full service dining was the norm. We hope that you feel the warmth of our space, the ease of our hospitality, and the delicious layers of flavors that our food and wine provide.

Food and wine were excellent. The wines were expensive, $16-28 a glass but were excellent. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were out of this world amazing. The appetizers, celery soup and pate tartlet were outstanding with fabulous taste depth and textures. The salads, brassicas and house, were flat and nothing to write home about. The portions were good sized for sharing. They had a lot of crunchy bits on them but were missing fat and acid for some flavor. Something salty like cheese would have been appreciated. The entrees, duck confit and sturgeon, were good but not fabulous. The duck was sousvided and fortunately not too dry. Beans in the dish were fresh and had good texture. The fennel was done 3 ways in the duck confit and it was nice without being overpowering, but it was lacking fat and salt for that luscious mouth feel I expect with duck. The sturgeon was ok, it’s not the best fish to start with and it was a tad overcooked, but the chickpea sauce was delicious and made up for it. We would like to see a better fish next time, maybe sea bass, halibut, or swordfish. It was worth trying the sturgeon as it was an interesting choice. Desserts and coffee were all delicious. We loved the ambience: great colors; comfortable seats; no loud music. We would return based on the fabulous building, wines, appetizers, and desserts.

This place is a real gem. Excellent food, hospitable staff, great atmosphere, good value for money. Will definitely go again. The hamachi and mushroom crepes were out of this world.

We were so excited to try this restaurant. We walked in and no one talked to us. We finally got seated at the bar and the bar keeper was rude and not engaged. We were seated an hour after our reservation time and the poor service continued. We had himachi that was so fishy and warm that we sent it back. Such a disappointment. My friend was visiting from San Francisco, how embarrassing.

My experience definitely did not live up to the hype. My party was seated over 45 minutes after our reservation time. The waitress was friendly and mildly apologetic, but originally had told us it would only be an additional 15-20 minutes. We were told to go get drinks at a different establishment and come back. When we came back, the wait staff ignored us. It was very awkward- especially since in the reservation there are clear policies about how long you can have your table. Why have a policy if it's not enforced? Why have reservations at all if you can't run a tight ship? When we were finally seated, the only comp offer of apology was a half pour of wine. As far as the food, some dishes were excellent (the L'orange cake definitely had a 'wow' factor), though entrees were a significant wait as well, and some starter dishes fine but not stellar. The wine was excellent. Some dishes were delivered with explanations, others simply dropped off without a word. Overall it was pretty disappointing.

Cozy spot in an old Victorian. Classic eastside Portland dining. Elevated French esque comfort food that’s well prepared. Well chosen wine list with plenty of great choice for geeks and non geeks alike. I’ve been there 6 times and always have enjoyed

The most charming space operated by a gracious, friendly and enthusiastic team that are serving some of, if not, the best food, and thoughtfully paired beverages, in Portland. True facts.

We had an amazing experience at L’Orange last night. It was my 3rd time in but the first for the rest of our four too. We sat in the res room which made for the most perspective private dining experience. The food was absolutely outstanding- we each had a soup and then doubled up on cheese plates, bread and butter, crepes, pasta, salad and asparagus. The new spring menu was s good, and as always the service and wine and desserts were perfect. Cannot praise this place enough. Thank you!

Exceptional in every way. Serving sizes were appropriate and priced fairly. Most dishes sharable, although the chicken liver is so good that I don't recommend sharing. The surgeon, mushroom crepe, and the duck confit were all to die for. Small wine list is very fairly priced. Service was attentive but not overdone. In my mind, this a restaurant for foodies.... nothing more. 5 stars.
