About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Great for creative cocktails
Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

This was one of the best dinners we’ve had in a while. Our fav was the mussels appetizer. Excellent. Ambience is great and service was excellent. Would definitely go back again when in the area.

The food at Le Coq was absolutely outstanding—easily 5-star quality. The beef tartare, onion tart, and rack of lamb were all perfectly executed and full of flavor. Truly unforgettable dishes. Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the caliber of the food. Our server seemed distracted and disengaged, with no attention to pacing the meal. We would have gladly ordered more drinks, but the opportunity never came—our server was rarely around. We’ll be back for the food, but hoping for a more attentive experience next time.

Amazing experience with the flambé 3 course special. The martini is easily in the top 1% of all martinis in San Diego. Tuna tartare was also incredible. Our server was amazing. We were a little annoyed it took a while to greet and get our drink order since we were starving! Otherwise, don’t believe the bad reviews you see. This place goes HARD.

This was good, but the steaks were not high-quality and very overpriced. Recommend other steakhouses if you want a fancy experience — Born & Raised, Cowboy Star, Rare Society.

Three of us shared the onion tart, the citrus salad, steak frites, and the swordfish almondine. We enjoyed it all! The swordfish was delectable. The tart was a nice combination of rich caramelized onion and flaky, tasty crust. The steak cooked medium was beautifully seasoned, the fries crisp and hot. The wine by the glass offered a lovely sancerre, and the Old Fashioned cocktail was smooth and spicy. I'll be back!

What an amazing dining experience! My husband and I don't go out to eat very much, except for special occasions. For this reservation, we were celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. Since I always make reservations via OpenTable, I specifically noted our special occasion. For a majority of our past reservations, the restaurants almost NEVER acknowledge the "special occasions" note and it truly becomes a disappointment. However, at Le Coq, both the hostess and server wished us a happy anniversary upon our arrival. This made a HUGE difference in our experience. It is ALWAYS the little things that matter and so thank you to Le Coq!

Mediocre food. Had to send back salty fish. They comped the fish which was nice. Steak was ok at best. Overall meh and not worth the price
