About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
The James Beard House is known as New York’s best-kept gastronomic secret. And everyone is welcome. Located in the former townhouse of celebrated cookbook author & television personality James Beard, the James Beard house is in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village. Over 20 dining events are held monthly to showcase culinary artists from around the world, featuring multi-course dinners with wine pairings prepared by guest chefs. At the historic James Beard House, you will have a truly unique dining experience. You’ll begin the evening with wines & a selection of passed hors d’oeuvre in the Greenhouse or, weather permitting, in the outdoor garden. You will then enjoy a five-course, pre-set menu prepared by the day’s featured chef, all paired with wines chosen to enhance the flavor of your meal. You will even have an opportunity to walk through the kitchen, see the chefs in action, & meet the guest chef personally. Prepaid reservations are required for all events.

Exceptional on every level! The JBH is a hidden secret amongst the NYC food scene. The reality is that it is available to all by visiting their website. The Burlock Coast group from Ft. Lauderdale and Chef Gavin, were amazing! Each course was creative and perfectly balanced. The wine pairings were superb. The service staff at the JBH was helpful, attentive and extremely professional. I recommend the opportunity to attend an event at the JBH to anyone looking for an exquisite culinary experience!

Had the pleasure of dining when the visiting chef was Gavin Pera and his staff. Each course from the appetizers to each of the dinner courses built upon each other and were truly phenomenal. The rum based cocktails were outstanding and the dessert was amazing. To top off the outstanding food we had the priviledge of being seated with a wonderful couple from the Washington DC area who was retired from the US Air Force after serving 28 years and continues to serve our country after his retirement. Truly spectacular evening.

The seating was too tight for the room size, our server passed plates over the head of my fellow dining guest for me to serve myself. Leaving the table to use the restroom during dinner was uncomfortable . The room was so loud that we could not converse during dinner. The food was disappointing. The outdoor reception prior to dinner was lovely, the appetizers were very nice. The wine was presented well with an engaging explanation by a well informed representative of the winery. The dining room staff was cordial. This dinner was to be the highlight of a trip with friends and was very disappointing.

The event I attended was one held by Chef Marcello Verzino of Scottsdale, Arizona. From the canapes to the dessert, the cuisine was simply outstanding. It was authentic, savory, delicious and unique. I had dined at Amarone, his restaurant in New York. It was the best hand-made past I had ever had and this current dining experience did not disappoint. The ambience of the James Beard House is perfect for this kind of event. The patio is beautiful, intimate and festive. The outdoor bar is the perfect centerpiece of this well-designed space. The patrons that this event attracted were interesting, cordial, diversified and endlessly enjoyable. I haven't enjoyed a dining experience this much in decades.

It's an unusual experience to dine here although dinners are offered 300 nights a year with changing chefs Service was iffy, much like a large catered affair that has a formula , which it indeed is

The food from the guest Chefs is excellent. However the cocktail hour is a mess with the guests dive bombing the servers for the hors D'Oeuvres--it's as if the guests have been starving all day. Many guests don't get any since some guests take all the food. The seating is very cramped and the guests have to pass dirty dishes to each other to get to the servers. They should have fewer guests so it would be a more pleasant event. They need to restock the rest room with toilet paper. Won't return.

The James Beard House is always awesome. The Summertime Soiree did not disappoint. Excellent food from a variety of chefs paired with inventive cocktails. Festive vibe. Can't wait to return...
