About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.

Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Its importance was also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which declared it a national reference point in 2001. No other public place in Italy had received the same award in the same century.

For all the hype the experience is just so so. Way too expensive!

It is always interesting to examine the aggregate scores of reviews from OpenTable, Yelp, and TripAdvisor. However, those scores do not always accurately reflect the true nature of a business. I've read the mixed reviews for Harry's, but I have to say this is truly one of the Iconic special occasion experiences to be had in Venice - both historically and in terms of the overall ambiance. Yes, there are more opulent appearing restaurants, and ones where food and value proposition may be more compelling, but Harry's is a unique and special place. Not only because Ernest Hemingway drank there and wrote there, but because you can be part of a confluence of well-heeled tourists and Venetian society. It is an exciting and dynamic experience unlike any other in Venice. They don't cite a dress code, but you see people dressed with a sense that they are going to be observed by the other guests! It makes for an exciting fashion show. The manager's sure-footed nature, the staff's eagerness to please, and the hospitality of the Cipriani family are not to be missed.

Quality of the food was overall good an ok. The problem is that I found it not worth the money. Simple Pasta for 46 EUR per Person … without any seafood or expensive ingredients is simply too much. Bellini was excellent, however also here quantity was small and price with 22 EUR on the higher end of the range. In a nutshell there are better places in Venice to get good pasta or a nice drink.

Iconic bar and restaurant in Venice. A little pricey but well worth it. The service, drinks (Bellini, Negroni, Cipriani wines) and food are awesome with plentiful servings to share.

Leider massiv überteuert. Nur die Tradition zu verkaufen wird vielleicht irgendwann zu wenig sein. Die Preise stehen in keiner Relation zum Gebotenen.

Classic restaurant experience. Very professional service and excellent food and drink. Enjoyed it very much. Would be good for the dress code to be made clearer - as there is lots of mixed information out there saying its a strict smart dress code when actually people were smart casual including denim jeans - so a little misleading. Overall very enjoyable.

En fait lieu incontournable de Venise assez bruyant et les tables sont serrées et le service très presse accueil chaleureux je pense qu'il faut juste aller boire un verre.
