It was really noisy when we arrived at 7:00, but it started clearing out halfway through our delicious meal, until it was fine. The food was great: escargots with bits of crispy pastry, pork tenderloin with parsnip puree, cassoulet, liver pate and the a wonderful brownie with coconut ice cream. I had to take home some pork due to the generous portion.

I came to French Roast for our annual spring visit to NYC. I had spoken to the hostess about celebrating my son's birthday and requested an accommodation of 10ppl. Hostess was exceptional - polite and friendly. Stated we could have a candle with dessert for my son's birthday. Upon arrival, we found a lively and crowded restaurant, a perfect NYC ambiance. We sat indoors, but noticed a lovely patio guests seemed to enjoy. The bartender was our server, which was fine until after he took our order. We waited about 30mins for our dinners to arrive, which the busser presented, not our server. We never saw our server again (though, in fact I could see him bartending the entire time). Our server never checked in with us, refilled our drinks, asked us if our food was ok, or even gave us a chance to order dessert for my son's birthday. The manager did come around to quickly say hello (much appreciated) but at that point we were so disappointed with the lack of quality service we just left. I had the mussels for dinner - dry, no bread, french fries unsalted. Overall, this restaurant is just meh for the price and location.

Jamie, I am certainly sorry to hear of this less than exemplary experience. While it was a very busy night there is no excuse for less than stellar service. He was not our regular Saturday bartender/ server as the holiday weekend called for some substitutions , but that is no excuse. I apologize for not providing you with the exemplary service we strive for on a regular basis.

Lively French bistro with an array of brunch standards. Nicoise salad was delicious as was the escargot. The pesto zucchini was a tad too oily (for our taste)-- bread for the table would have helped. Service is always fantastic and the ambience festive.

Once again, a young relative and I found ourselves comfortably seated at French Roast for (this time) early Friday dinner. Wonderful ambiance and salads, drinks and dessert. Unfortunately we overstayed the allotted time for our reservation (slightly under 2 hours) and were politely shown the bar area(!), but chose to leave. French Roast can often get booked up and quite busy - not a well-kept secret (but well worth it, if you're up for sharing the moment...!).

Delicious food. Great bread, good wine and beer selections by the glass. The hostess was super nice and though we had to ask our waiter for bread a few times (or maybe we're unaware it just takes a while because it's so fresh) we had a pretty perfect dinner out. We both left without a scrap left in our plates and I'm picky so that's rare. Second time there and the cassoulet, short rib, coq au vin are all excellent. The steak au poivre was good, but I'm biased because I always expect a crust, not just the pepper in the sauce. It's really cool that they give an option for a glass and half of wine. The decor is French and cute and the noise level is tolerable even when busy. The music is just a sit should be, in the background, so you can talk to your fellow diner. If I lived in that neighborhood I'd be in trouble, because I'd go way too often for my own good.

Glad we made reservations - nonstop busy this Sunday and it wasn’t warm enough to eat outside. Good portion sizes. Was able to swap pita for baguette with the shashuka. The stuffed croissant sandwich was a good size and fruit was delicious.
