About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
Compère Lapin - noun - "kom-pare la-pan" - 1. anthropomorphic rabbit character who served as the mischievous protagonist in Creole and Caribbean folk tales; 2. Chef Nina Compton's restaurant at the Old No 77 Hotel & Chandlery in the Warehouse Arts District of New Orleans.

Meals aren’t about trends, shock value, or opulence.
Meals are about moments, memories and those who surround you at your table.
We believe in the complexity of simplicity, and the power of pure flavors. Our histories, vast and varied, deserve to be memorialized and romanticized by dishes that at once remind us of home and transport us to somewhere new.

We don’t make food for everyone else, we make food for you.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Nina Compton

From the OpenTable editors: At Compère Lapin, James Beard Award-winning chef Nina Compton dazzles with showstopping dishes that marry her Caribbean heritage and French fine dining pedigree. Dig into favorites like goat curry and broiled shrimp with Calabrian chili butter in a stylish space dressed with exposed brick and warm woods. Don’t miss award-winning cocktails like The Copper Hopper—a tropical, tequila-forward drink served in a copper bunny mug, a nod to the restaurant’s namesake folklore rabbit.

Our meal was fantastic. Big hits were the goat curry, the fried chicken, the papaya salad and the smoked fish dip. Servers were knowledgeable and not over-present. Entrees were well priced.

This restaurant came highly recommended. We were very disappointed. We ordered one appetizer and two entrees. The entrees came out very quickly - before our appetizer. When we said we had ordered an appetizer the runner just put our entrees down in front of us. Shortly our waiter came over and said it will be out soon. The entrees were very small- more like a soup course. The goat stew was flavorless. The pasta with shrimp, clams, butternut squash and Brussels sprouts was a pile of group with no Brussels sprouts in sight and 3 tiny shrimp. Over seasoned- very salty. We ate slowly, waiting for our appetizer which came about 20 minutes later. We asked for that to be taken off the bill which it was without an apology. When we asked for our bill the wrong bill was given to us. Again no apology for that mistake. A disappointing experience all around.

I went in mostly blind and was so impressed. The dining room is gorgeous and cozy, what a huge and stunning bar! Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Biscuits were not high on my list, but they were one of my favorites! Doing such simple and home things incredibly well is always a good sign. The gnocchi with goat curry could have billed me and brought me right back to life! Such incredible flavor! We always order too much and took the rest back to our hotel. Ate it cold the next morning and still delicious.

Do yourself a favor and go eat here. Even better if you get Raven as your server - she gives the BEST recommendations.

Compere Lapin is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I've been there a handful of times but never tried the "Just Feed Me" option. It was perfect. I was able to try things I probably wouldn't have chosen for myself. The mirliton and papaya salad-- wow! New favorite dish. The fried chicken was fantastic. Dessert was less memorable. A reliably good creme brulee and a bread pudding that was too heavy. But I don't like bread pudding for that exact reason. However, what was good about the bread pudding is that it was individually cooked so all edges were crispy. Of course we will be back.

“Just feed me” tastings option was great. Sommelier recommended wine was absolutely spot on. You can’t do better than this. Server was very good as well.
