In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month we are excited to be cooking in tandem with Chef James Yuen Leung Parry of Happy Crane restaurant that is slated to open very soon in San Francisco. The Happy Crane represents a restaurant and a mission that is deeply personal to James Yeun Leong Parry, The Happy Crane’s chef and founder. Born half-Chinese and English, fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin, Parry’s unique upbringing and experiences have shaped everything we do. Raised in Hong Kong, a place that deftly tread the line between East and West, but never compromised on its cuisine. Adventures across Mainland China, from his Beijing years immersed in the country’s richly diverse culture, to tutelage in the culinary capital of Chengdu, studying the inner workings of regional Sichuan cuisine. Then a return to his home city, rising the ranks of Michelin-starred Chinese, Japanese and French kitchens such as Bo Innovation, Tenku RyuGin and Ta Vie. And the right opportunities brought him here to the Bay Area, where he joined Corey Lee’s three Michelin-starred Benu and later Palette Tea House as their Chef de Cuisine. Those global experiences now effortlessly present themselves on your plate. Local, seasonal flavours. Modern, but not fusion. Progressive, but profoundly Chinese. The Happy Crane is a contemporary Chinese restaurant with the mission of changing people’s perception of what a Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area can be. We offer a multi-course tasting menu for $259 per person. An optional global beverage pairing is available for $119 per person. A $100 per guest security deposit is collected upon booking the reservation. The deposit will be credited towards your final check after your experience at the restaurant. In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month we are excited to be cooking in tandem with Chef Aisha Ibrahim, formerly of Canlis in Seattle, Washington. Aisha Ibrahim was born in Iligan City located in the Philippines southernmost island, Mindanao. She immigrated to the U.S. at the age of six and remained connected to her heritage through her parents and grandparents’ cooking. She launched her career in 2006 relocating to the Bay Area after leaving a college basketball scholarship to pursue cooking full time. Throughout her career, she has spent time at some of the best kitchens in the world including Commis, Manresa, Azurmendi, Kagurazaka Ishikawa, L’effervescence, & Nihonryori Ryugin. Ibrahim accepted the Executive Chef position at Canlis Restaurant in April 2021. In 2023, she was recognised as a Food & Wine Best New Chef in its 35th class. In 2024 she was named to the North American panel in the San Pellegrino Young Chef Competition as well as North America’s global mentor for the upcoming international competition in Milan, Italy later this year. In October 2024, she was named to TIME Magazine’s prestigious 100 NEXT —a list of emerging global leaders who are shaping and redefining the next generation of leadership. In November of 2024, she was also named to Robb Report’s “Ten Rising Power Players in American Fine Dining”. A bit of insight on her very own new upcoming restaurant: Unlike the rest of Filipino cuisine, Mindanaoan cuisine utilizes spices common to Southeast Asia such as turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, cinnamon, chillies, and the leaves or zest of native citrus. The cuisine of the indigenous ethnolinguistic south is rich and spice-based reflecting the history and pride in the Philippines most diverse island. With a strong use of coconut milk and spice pastes, it distinguishes itself clearly from the rest of the Philippines. We offer a multi-course tasting menu for $259 per person. An optional global beverage pairing is available for $119 per person. A $100 per guest security deposit is collected upon booking the reservation. The deposit will be credited towards your final check after your experience at the restaurant. From the beginning to the end I noticed that every employee knows the reason to be there: to serve and provide a high end quality service. The team really make you feel special. Little details as to walk you to the bathroom, explain the wine history before you drink and the intricate fabrication of the food. The postcard signed by the staff for my girlfriend birthday. Lot of details and they cover all. THANK YOU for ana amazing night.

The restaurant decor was modern and clean. The servers polite, informative and accommodating and well dressed. We were celebrating my husband’s birthday and he got a few surprise “gifts” during dinner. He found an insect crawling on his food. He took a video of the little guy zipping along. When we told our server, the dish was replaced with many apologies. Next, the crab contained a sharp shell and hen gristle attached to bone necessitated he spit into his napkin. We understand these things happen time and again. It’s not a huge deal but for $1000 for 2, there was no value and we were glad it was just us and we weren’t hosting guests. We had a good time, laughed a lot, we enjoyed the interesting food presentations and tastes. The wine pairing definitely enhanced the flavors. However, at the end of the experience I asked my husband to look around and take it all in because we probably won’t be back.

Came to Commis with my wife for our anniversary. The exterior is unassuming, but inside is nicely decorated with an open kitchen. Food: The tasting menu started off strong—fantastic seafood and bites. We saw James working and made eye contact to which he gave a nod of acknowledgement; though my wife wished we got to say hello. Anyways we both loved it at the beginning. However, the main course was a a bit disappointing. The hen dish was confusing and not enjoyable, and the $30 wagyu supplement was chewy, slathered in BBQ sauce, and far from melt-in-your-mouth. For $30 we expected...different. The fried rice was mediocre. I would say of the 10 courses, 8 were phenomenal, but the mains need to hit. Atmosphere: Cozy but uncomfortably cold. The temperature fluctuated, and despite wearing layers, I was chilly most of the meal; I should've spoken up so thats on me. Value: The bill was around $750 with no drinks, which felt steep given the disappointing main courses and the unexpected $12 coffee charge. We’ve dined at many Michelin-starred spots, and while we don’t mind paying for quality, this missed the mark. Plus, usually when asked if we wanted coffee or tea, it is complimentary, just saying. Overall: Commis had a great start, but they just need to swap out the 2 dishes and perhaps re-evaluate the $30 wagyu because that wasn't good. Now, maybe it was just a hiccup for our table, but for us, for the price we paid we left a bit disappointed.

As expected, impeccable, friendly service. Beverage program (cocktails/wine) was outstanding. The food was quite good, but flavors and textures felt somewhat repetitive over the courses, and never really blew us away. With a final check of over $1000 for two, the creativity of the menu didn't feel quite up to the par of the bill or of other coursed places in the area. While Mago (across the street) doesn't have the same level of polish (obviously) or as robust beverage pairing, I feel like it outshines Commis when it comes to inventive, interesting cuisine. It was nice to knock this off the list, but if I do come back, it'll be for the bar menu.

Overall a quiet (3.5-point) disappointing food experience (Feb 2025 menu). Service was good, no complaint. Servers were nice enough to help me pack my unfinished dishes. Had the full tasting menu and portion overall as same shared feeling with other reviews. First four courses are fine (three small bites, raw fish appetizer, caviar and daikan radish, and slow poached egg yolk with bread). But the main courses of the Feb 2025 menu was unsatisfactory. The steamed sole was accompanied with tasteless/no flavor beautifully green veggie sauce - which in my opinion could be cooked with shrimp sauce to add up the ocean/seafood flavor/feel to the sole fish. Scallop and its ham flavor sauce are good; but not sure what the foam-ish food on the left side was trying to convey. The sausage was creative and acceptable;but the duck piece had skin with thick layer of fat not cooked well (tastes like eating fat directly, disgusting) and there were a lot of meat fascia not removed (hard to chew; the worst medium /medium rare kind of meat I had). What was the purpose of having the warmed prune? If a plate cleanser, then it’s better be cold. If to add flavor, plz make it a jam-hard to chew.Rice pot and sweets are fine(especially like the last three small bites). Except for jasmine ice cream (I like the ice cream itself), the chef could possibly consider remove the either the bitter grapefruit skin taste jelly on the top or the sour pomelo meat on the side - because with all together, this desert has too many flavors (sweet, bitter and sour all together, tasting weirdly like biting the pomelo without peeling). If I have to go again, I would pick the short bar table menu - includes majority of the acceptable or tasty appetizers but not that many unpredictable main courses. Overall, unlikely to go again because the performance of the menu was unstable to me. Sincerely (no offense) recommend the chef to take time to job shadow/learn Beijing/Cantonese roasted duck or French duck cooking skills.
