We used to frequent this restaurant almost weekly when we lived in the area over a decade ago, so during a recent nostalgic visit to Balham, we decided to return and relive the experience. In terms of food, it did not disappoint, the menu still offers a diverse selection to suit a range of tastes, and while prices are on the higher side, the quality of the ingredients makes it a justifiable indulgence.
That said, the overall experience was tarnished by two deeply disappointing elements. First, the service was inconsistent. While the older staff and the owner made us feel welcome, a younger waiter displayed a noticeably poor attitude, giving the impression that serving guests was more of a burden than a job.
Worse still was what happened when it came time to pay the bill. We requested a specific amount to be added as a gratuity, a clear and simple gesture of appreciation. Instead, the owner added double that amount without asking or informing us, and then attempted to obscure the total when presenting the card machine. When we noticed the discrepancy and pointed it out, there was no apology, no explanation, only a nonchalant shrug.
This behaviour was not only unprofessional, it felt dishonest. It left us questioning whether this was an isolated incident or part of a broader pattern. If this kind of overcharging happens regularly, even with a fraction of tables, it would represent a serious ethical issue and a significant misuse of customer trust.
What should have been a joyful return to a cherished place has instead left a bitter aftertaste. We will not be returning, and we will certainly be warning others. It’s a real shame to see a once-beloved restaurant fall so far short of the standard it once upheld.
