About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Kid-friendly
A Baltimore landmark since 1978, Captain James Landing Restaurant has earned the name "most unique eatery" in Baltimore City. For starters we are the only restaurant shaped like a merchant vessel. Five brothers created a restaurant in the 70"s with the goal of providing quality service to the citizens of Baltimore, Maryland as well as the thousands of tourist that visit our Monumental City. Our Waterfront Crab House (located adjacent of our restaurant) was awarded in 2012 "#1 Best Crabs in Baltimore" by Baltimore Magazine. Our Crab House is the one spot in the city where you can eat steamed crabs with a true waterfront seating. Water Taxi Stop #14 brings you right to our waterfront location.

We were seated within a few minutes of our reservation and had a good experience. Service was a little slow - it seemed that for a full dining room they might have been just a hand short. The venue features two long central tables for large groups, and both were filled while we were there. The length of the tables made it so folks at one end had to raise their voices to be heard by the other end of their party and raised the volume of the whole room as a result. It wasn't unbearable, but this definitely wasn't a romantic date spot - def felt much more family friendly. Which was great for us - we had our child there, and her grandmother. That said, since its seafood its expensive, so folks looking to balance that "good expensive seafood" moment against the vibe of the room might be a little perplexed.

Make a reservation and call ahead if you want crabs! Don't let the dated decor fool you, if you want an authentic Baltimore experience, this is the place to be! We got snow crab legs that were full of meat, the lobster roll was just chunks of lobster, outstanding, although it should come with drawn butter, I borrowed it from the crab leg plate! Our server was super attentive and we did not wait long once we were seated. We always come here when in town!

AM had the lobster roll, which is clearly one of the best in the Baltimore area. I had the lamb chops which came out a perfect medium as requested. A glass of shiraz was a great complement to the lamb.

Where do I begin? First time coming here, and it was not a good experience for any of us. Ordered the crab dip, and it was honestly the worst I've ever had. Actually sent it back. It was so fishy, and had a weird, dingy, off white color, had wayyyy too much Old Bay, was too spicy, and was oily. Was gonna just keep it and let everyone else eat it, but the whole table agreed it was nasty. Then I ordered a chicken Caesar salad and it had no actual shaved or shredded parmesan cheese on it, just the grated kind from a can, yet cost $20. They didn't have any good girly/fruity drinks to choose from, mostly wines. We really wanted something fozen, like a daiquiri. Our whole bill came to almost $240 for 4 people! They also added on an automatic gratuity for 4 people and the service sucked! Once our food came, we didn't see our server again for over 45 minutes. Didn't check on us once to see if we were good, needed refills, or anything. My husband had to finally flag her down. Was debating on getting the crabcake sandwich, but it was $41! For a SANDWICH not even a platter! Only thing that was halfway decent was my husband's burger, and even that didn't come with cheese, had to pay extra. Got a slice of Oreo cheesecake to go, and it looked more like a chocolate mousse cheesecake, it was so dark, and such a tiny slice. The inside was small and cramped. All in all, not a good dining experience, and will not return. 👎
