About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Innovative
  • Romantic
Café Bleu, in San Diego, serves mouth-watering modern French and Latin-inspired cuisine in its relaxing and atmospheric restaurant. The artisan cheese plate of the day laden honey comb, dried fruit salpicon and crostini and the mussels mariniere sautéed with white wine, butter, lemon, garlic and shallots made sensational starter plates. Some of Café Bleu's specialty entrées include the rajas and shrimp with Spanish chorizo, sautéed jumbo shrimp, roasted corn and pasilla rajas in crème fraiche, the wine-braised chicken coq au vin with roasted pork belly and potato gratin and the filet mignon au poivre in a tri-color pepper crust and peppercorn demi-glace, all of which are perfcetly prepared. Café Bleu's brunch offerings are wildly popular, including the classic croque monsier sandwich with French ham, gruyere cheese and béchamel sauce and the brioche brandy French toast with maple syrup and strawberries

Exceptional food and service. Our server, Grady, is easily one of the best servers we've had. He knows the menu and is very attentive.

My girlfriend and I ate at Cafe Bleu. I'll give you the positives and negatives. We'll start with the positives. The restaurant is cute and in a good location. Prices are fair, but I'd probably give it 3 dollar signs instead of two. The cheapest wine on the list was very good. I also thought the service was very pleasant and efficient. Now the negatives. We visited their website and saw that they offered a Prix Fixe menu for $21.95 with a wine pairing for $15.95. We asked for that and was told by one gentleman that the Prix Fixe menu is only offered on Sunday. If you click on their website's "specials" link, it does not mention that the Prix Fixe menu is only on Sunday. While the first gentleman said that the wine pairing too was on Sunday only, our waiter said they had discontinued the wine pairing although "we know pretty much what wine pairs with which dish". Okay fine, but again no mention of the wine pairing being discontinued on the website, and there was even disparity between the two gentlemen as to whether or not it was offered at all. Now on to the food. We started with French Onion soup. Pretty good, but there was a "turkey stuffing" like flavor that I didn't love. Out of fairness, my girlfriend didn't pick up on that flavor and said that it was "not bad". I had the Coq au Vin. I didn't think that the flavors were that great nor did they come together properly. Seems like it could have used some/longer marinade and the spices seemed a bit off to me. It also came with a potato and cheese side that was above average. My girlfriend had the Steak Frittes. The steak was cooked properly but was a bit tough. I do understand that Hanger Steak is far from Filet Mignon, but it could have benefited from some marinading, or maybe they did that. The fries were just fine. I didn't hate Cafe Bleu, but candidly I doubt that we would return.

Glad we visited Café Bleu! Food was delicious (we had the steak frites & duck breast à l'orange) and the service was excellent (thanks Ric). The selection of wines by the glass is very good.

I consider Cafe Bleu a lucky find, especially for getting together with a friend or small group. The food and wine are very good, a charming ambiance, friendly and good service, price is right, and it is open more hours and days than a lot of restaurants.

always a great spot, for great food. New server, who I do not think has the necessities to work in a restaurant of this quality. Better suited for a beer bar.
