   Promised Mexican food not smothered in cheese ... got Mexican food smothered in cheese . It was like a pastel Denny's -- kinda disappointing. Drinks were good.

   Great food. Not your usual Tex Mex. Love the atmosphere. Quiet with lovely decor. Cocktails are wonderful especially if you can get them at Happy Hour prices. Try this restaurant. You'll be glad you did!

   The Kansas City area is not known for its great Mexican food. Nevertheless, there are decent places around town. I had read that Cacao Restaurante in was good, so I made the long drive to find out. I liked that it was different from the Tex Mex fare that I mostly eat. It's a little difficult to find healthy Mexican food (low sodium, low trans fat). I enjoyed the shrimp ceviche (healthy item), and the mini snopes. I loved the sangre-rita, a combination of sangria and margarita. I ordered the mole enchiladas (healthy due to no cheese), which were okay. My companion got soup with her meal. When I tried to substitute soup for beans and rice, I got a firm "No", with not even a counteroffer with an upcharge. So, I settled on beans and rice. The refried beans were very flavorful. The rice was not much better than "On the Order" rice. On the whole, I would go back, eventually.

   First time dining here and we were impressed with the originality of the menu and the high quality of the food. We will be frequenting this restaurant.

   Cacao is a neighborhood gem. They serve real food. I have had two lunches and a dinner here and each meal was delicious. There are lots of vegetarian options. The soups are fantastic. We discovered they have a lovely private room for a party of 8-10 or so. Many interesting cocktails on the menu. Ready to go back!

   Our server was fantastic; very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. The kitchen was a disaster on this particular evening; we waited over 45-50 min for entrees (did not order appetizers). We were provided complementary chips and salsa due to the wait. The food was very good, and the drinks were quite good.

   We had a reservation for New Year's Eve. We were seated immediately. They weren't too busy at 6:30. Based on the reviews of others from this place we decided to try a Margarita. We got two spicy habenero, Serrano pineapple infused one's because our server recommended them. It was good but not really strong for $9. I'm not in it to get drunk but if you are paying that much money for a drink, you expect it to have some alcohol in it. Husband wasn't a fan of it. So we ordered a regular house margarita and it was good but same thing, not really any tequila in it. Then our server suggested the chile rellano so I ordered it. Very plain and really gamey (it was beef but that's the word that came to mind). My husband ordered the Baja Tacos. They were really good! He even swapped with me and ate the chile rellano because he knew that I wasn't digging it! I know, what a guy, right! So all in all, I would return and have more tacos. But honestly, I can cook better than this place....

   Second visit there. Decided for a New Years Eve dinner with my wife and her friend. As usual, the food was outstanding, except mine was wrong and had to be remade and didn't arrive until everyone else had finished theirs. Our server was fairly new and quite clue less. Took forever for our drinks and then delivered them to the wrong table. If it wasn't for the atmosphere and good food, we probably would have raised a fuss.

    This place was amazing. There's no other spot like it in Kansas City. It reminds me of those really nice restaurants in Chicago and New York. The nice Mexican restaurant not the super nice restaurant. The flavors and all the dishes are thought out. The beans were a little too soupy for me and I feel the salsa could get hotter the heat just wasn't there. This may not be a five-star experience and one of the bigger cities but for KC this a really good Mexican option.
