About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Neighborhood gem
Welcome to The Black Swan. Inspired by the pubs I fell in love with on my various travels, this re-interpretation of the neighborhood Public House represents an eclectic and updated take on the traditional pub. The Black Swan explores, embraces and combines various cultural influences to appeal to different tastes, offering unique and innovative dishes like Indian-inspired curries and pastas alongside more classic dishes like Shepherd’s Pie and Fish and Chips. I purposefully divided the restaurant into four distinct areas in order to offer something for everyone and I encourage all our neighbors to stop in at any hour, day or night. So come raise a glass with me at The Black Swan Public House, where everyone is Welcome. - Chef James

Early Friday night meal and the bar is hopping and very noisy. We were seated in the restaurant next to the bar, and it was pretty much empty, but very noisy from the bar. Tried out the Black Swan again after visiting recently on a food tour. Ordered the tots and baked brie as appetizers and the tots were only luke warm, but tasty. Brie was nice but the crackers weren't hardy enough - kept breaking. Had the Cottage Pie and Salmon as mains and they were good, but my wife's salmon was a little fishy. We won't rush back, and what a pain parking in Asbury.

The food and ambience was great! Service very friendly and courteous. The noise was little more than I would like but tall open ceiling were to blame.

We asked about mocktails and they had 3 lovely ones and none were on the menu. For lunch with not many diners, the food took awhile to come and served after the diners that were seated after us. These diners also placed their orders after us. No fruit substitutes for fries. My friend was dealing with health issues.Said could have veggies and they would be boiled broccoli and cauliflower. The meal came out with slices of carrots and cucumbers 🤷‍♀️ on the wrong plate. A very young server, I am sure she was inexperienced and trying so we cut them some slack.

Great atmosphere but the acoustics are terrible: I struggled to hear my friend sitting right next to me. The beer list is fantastic and the prices are not unreasonable by today's standards. A decent value for entrees (which were delicious) but soups and appetizers are unconscionably priced: uh...ONE Scotch egg for $14??? I though that we would get at least two for that price; uh...a bowl of (not particularly creamy) tomato bisque for $12? It was fairly tasty but not a true bisque. Coffee is not very good. I make the following comment with the Black Swan's staff in mind this evening, but I could say it about almost ANY restaurant: for the love of god, can service staff STOP spraying cleanser bottles into the air all over the tables as though they were trying to clean up a crime scene? If I had been on duty with the health department, I would have fail them on hygiene. No one wants detergent particles floating in the air a few feet away from their food. Spray the bottle INTO the cloth that you are using to wipe tables. This is restaurant 101 basics.

Food was very good. Like good enough for us to go again (but not on a weekend). Couple of issues: 1)It's a loud, crowded place. So so loud. And one of our party was basically sat in a busy aisle (which, is most of them) so was constantly bumped into by waitstaff without much by way of apologies. The number of chairs lifted over our heads/dragged past our table to bring to other tables was astonishing. I understand its busy but, do better. Seems like a lot of the staff is very green; all friendly but not so skilled at hospitality business. Runners, hostess, some of the waitstaff. They are either all new at this or this place is way understaffed. All has a "trying too hard" vibe. Why does a burger have to come on a wooden cutting board that is big for our small table? To justify the price? Just put it on a plate. I'm happy to pay for upscale if they actually understand how to give guests that experience. If I do go again, it won't be a weekend. Seems like they are outmatched for the crowds.

Great cocktails, fun lively atmosphere and great service. Food good but not great and really loud… too loud to have meaningful conversation.
