   Ava Gene's is a special place. I love the family style serving, the pasta and salads are always good and innovative.

   We so enjoyed our dinner with friends at Ava Gene's. The food and service both top shelf. The wait staff notably do not become engaged with the table so as to distract from the evening rather, they know when it's appropriate to step in. Such a great space.

   This is one of our absolute favorite restaurants and the food has always been outstanding. Sadly, the pasta was completely over-salted on our last visit (and we LOVE salt), so we regretfully sent it back. The replacement pasta was exactly as salty as the original to our great disappointment.

   Our first trip to Ava Gene's but it won't be our last. We enjoyed each bite from the appetizers to the after dinner Chinato. I had a lamb pasta dish and my spouse had the lamb main course; we agreed it was likely the best lamb we'd ever eaten. We were a bit disappointed they had sold out of the nightly special by 8 pm, but our delicious choices made us very happy. The restaurant was a bit noisier than we like, but since we were dining a litter later, it calmed down by the time our main courses arrived and we could hear each other speak. Love the atmosphere, it reminded us of eating in a European restaurant. Great wine selection of small Italian vineyards.

   Ava Gene'sis casually elegant, has a lively hum of conversation that is not overwhelming, and every course of food was delicious in an out of the ordinary sense. It has an excellent selection of wines, some of which, one must admit, were excessively costly for the flavor they delivered. Overall we had a lovely evening here.

   We love Ava Gene's. There are so many wonderful small plate options to start the meal with we seldom make it to the entrees, which is a shame; maybe next time. The moment we walked through the door we were greeted by their wonderful Maitre d', Jamie, whom we first met at Ox some time ago. She could not have been nicer and professional both upon our arrival and when we were leaving. The wait staff is top notch; they are prompt and attentive without being intrusive. For us seniors the ambient noise can be a bit of a problem, but easily resolved with another glass of wine. Speaking of wine, I really want to complement the sommelier. We were celebrating a birthday so I wanted a really nice sparkling wine (nothing French in such a nice Italian restaurant). From the wine list I was having trouble deciding between two fairly expensive wines. That problem was quickly resolved by their fabulous sommelier who admired our choices but then suggested we consider a few other wines which he described with precision, and they were half the price. With his assistance we made a final selection and found the wine to be exceptional, and we had extra money for dessert. Because Ava Gene's is one of the very best restaurants in Portland getting reservations can be tough; so plan ahead.

   Outstanding food but it was the service that took it over the top. Our server was awesome as well as the host and the other waitstaff. It is easy to find terrific restaurants in PDX, but it is ALWAYS difficult to find good service. Also, wonderful red wine. I let our server pick it out and it was perfect. My only disappointment was I asked that our pasta dish be put in a to go container with the rest of my salad and veggies. Our server said it was in the container and when I returned home, it was not in there :(

   I took a couple of my employees out for dinner on a Thursday. I had a particularly crazy week (month) and needed exactly what Ava Gene's delivered, which was excellent service and a well prepared and interesting meal. The ambiance was warm and relaxing. The noise level after things got hopping was just low enough to be able to converse without raising our voices. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to enjoy a delicious meal with a friend or loved one, or just for yourself.

    The service and reception was excellent! The somellier recommended an excellent, reasonably priced wine. She was very knowledgeable. It was difficult to determine what the food would be from the descriptions. My husband and I had the Sunday special. It was a pasta with sausage and pieces of pork. There was very little pork. With the high reviews and difficulty in getting a reservation, we expected more. Our friends had salmon and pasta. Everything was fair to good but not great. The restaurant was very noisy.
