About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions

Chef Fredrik Berselius brings his love of nature to his urban surroundings through food at Brooklyn's only two Michelin-starred restaurant. With an emphasis on ingredients from the Northeastern region and influenced by his Scandinavian homeland, Aska, Swedish for "ashes," offers a distinctive dining experience through a procession of courses prepared from an open kitchen and served to guests of only ten tables each night.

From the OpenTable editors: Fredrik Berselius's legendary Scandinavian restaurant has nearly every accolade imaginable—two MICHELIN Stars, a three-star New York Times review, and four stars from Eater. Far from resting on its laurels, the Williamsburg tasting-menu destination continues to showcase the best, hyper-seasonal local ingredients through a boundary-pushing Nordic lens.

The ambiance is interesting - i did not feel it was for me, emo music from 2000s and everything is black, including the table clothes, the napkins, the floor, ceiling, shelving, etc. The tasting menu starts off with 2 weak dishes, out of the 12 or so dishes we had, there were 3 that stood out: hake dish with a tasty sauce, the black caviar/shrimp bite and the Norwegian crustacean dish with a beautiful creamy sauce. The rest ranged from tasty and solid to average. What was really off-putting was the bill- we were totally ok with the ~$300 tasting menu fees and the $45 a glass wine, but we were amazed at the gall to charge us a $100 "admin fee" which they claimed provided us with transparency and covered their "non-tip" employees. The tip were layered on top of the food+drink+admin fee total.

the dining experience at Aska is superb. The meticulously designed dishes are thoughtfully constructed to balance perfectly paired ingredients, flavors, textures and presentation. Some dishes are infused with elements curated from the restaurant in house that have taken up to years to preserve in order to accent a plate with the perfect balance. The staff are clockwork in execution, warm, attentive and clearly love and have immense pride what they have achieved as a team. I love Aska and make a point to go at least twice a year when in NYC. Highest recommendation.
