About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Great for creative cocktails
Located just steps from the waterfront, ANIMAE is where West Coast flair meets Asian soul. Under the direction of Executive Chef Tara Monsod, a James Beard Award finalist, the menu delivers bold, genre-defying dishes like her signature Pork Tomahawk Tocino—a smoky, sweet, deeply umami showstopper grilled over a traditional coal-fired oven.

Inside, ANIMAE stuns with a maximalist-meets-modern aesthetic: think art deco glam, velvet banquettes, mirrored ceilings, and an energy that’s both sultry and celebratory. Whether you're dining in the main room or sipping cocktails in the tucked-away lounge, every corner invites you to stay awhile.

From the OpenTable editors: Filipino American chef Tara Monsod takes fusion food to the next level at this groovy Art Deco space. Expect opulent riffs on classics like crispy pig ears and kare kare—Monsod is one of the few chefs in the country putting Filipino food on the fine-dining stage. The approach earned her numerous awards, including a prestigious MICHELIN Plate.

Amazing vibe as soon as you walk in, food and service matched initial impression. Best first dinner in San Diego.

We tried the sea bass, the crab fried rice, and the snap pea salad with coconut and we’re only impressed by the last dish. The first two were average tasting. I do recommend the salad for its novel use of coconut cream paired with fresh veggies.

The service was fine and the food was mediocre. I’ve had lemongrass chicken at several places around the world and what they call lemongrass chicken here is certainly not that. Chicken was not bad but was very bland and certainly not worth $38.

It was our second time dining at Animae and both times were such a blast! The service is consistently great, the food never disappoints, and the drinks are so well balanced. My boyfriend was unsure about the first drink he got, so we politely asked if he could possibly switch for another one and the server was so nice about it! They gave me an extra dessert for my birthday and I loved it! I couldn’t pin my favorite dish because they were all amazing.

First time diners; anniversary diner. Located in downtown San Diego a block from the Bay, the restaurant was chic, yet casual and well appointed. Our parking was by valet ($20+tip on departure, credit card ONLY). We brought a special bottle of wine, so didn’t look at the wine list. Corkage was $35, and they decanted the wine nicely. Cocktails looked interesting, but we had the wine. Server (Victoria) was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and helpful with first time selections. We opted for the pea salad and Taiwanese chicken (think nuggets) with a nice aioli.. probably would go with the wontons next time. Entrees were the Lemongrass chicken and an 8oz wagyu filet. I initially was interested in the short rib kare kare, but the steak won out.. it was good, but not exceptional. Finished off with an apple yuzu sorbet.

The restaurant is a beautiful restaurant, no doubt. Very nice designs, great Gatsby vibe. The food is not bad but could be improved with small changes.

We came to Animae due to their recent awards, and the location is perfect. Valet was $20, which is very reasonable for parking in downtown San Diego. We loved the decor and ambiance as we entered the restaurant. We savored the flavors and enjoyed new dishes. I did find the pork belly to be too fatty, which may be a matter of personal preference. Surprisingly, it took 34 minutes from sitting down to having our first dish, especially with a pre-selected menu, such as the Ester brunch. Our waiter also spoke in a very soft voice, making it difficult to understand him clearly. Overall, it was a good experience.
