About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
Comforting favorites in Avondale by Chefs Johnny Clark and Beverly Kim inspired by old-world cooking. Start your meal with a selection of beverages like a bottle of trendy orange wine or head to the bar after work with no reservation needed for a craft cocktail like The Muse with gin and beet kvass. Our appetizer cart will roll to your table to start your dinner with over 10 bites beckoning to be picked like our fan-favorite smoked carrot paté or sunflower seed hummus. Our main dishes offer a variety of homestyle flavors just like your mother made from thick soups to layered pasta and fluffy Ukrainian garlic bread. Coffee, after-dinner drinks and a flaky pastry like our Napoleon invite you to finish the meal with a sweet treat and hours of good conversation in a space that feels like home.

We really enjoyed our meal at Anelya and will definitely be back! We had Lokshayna, Poltava Halishki, Holubsti, Pampushki, a couple of appetizers, quite a few drinks, and two slices of cake (we ended up sharing a lot between 4 of us, I definitely should have ate less). Personally, I don't think the appetizers are worth it. I'd get the Pampushki or another side (I want to try the Banosh) instead of those but we only got two so maybe others are great. Cocktails were delicious but likely small pours, so if you just love a beautifully delicious cocktail and not as focused on the effect get one, but if looking for an effect maybe drink a bit before or after the meal elsewhere. The mains were incredible with the Lokshayna and Poltava Halishki being my favorite! The desserts were also very very good. We'll definitely be back! Next time we'll share a couple of mains, try the grits, and maybe more Pampushki depending on what we order. We'd also share cake, both the layered honey cake and boozy cherry (less boozy tasting than a lot of boozy desserts which both myself and one other at the table considered a good thing) we're delicious! Our server was also fantastic!

My colleague and I came for supper. The appetizers were displayed on a cart, so we could see and ask questions about all of the options (some very unfamiliar to us, so great opportunity). We started with the orange wine served chilled, hummus (so smooth), and bread. For the meal, we split the borsch (smoky and a little sweet) and short ribs. We finished it off with the hazelnut dessert, which featured so many textures and was absolutely delicious. Thank you for allowing our tastebuds to explore!

Many of the dishes our group tried were very good, but the portions were small. Great ambiance!

Prix fixe menu for dinner and drinks. Very good value. The depth of flavors, textures and presentation was simply incredible. A very special place.

We’ve had an amazing experience at Anelya. From the cozy interior to the serving of the starters, we were intrigued by what dish was coming next and will definitely want to come back. We ordered borscht, lokshina, a bunch of different starters and pyana vishnya dessert. We also tried a bunch of nastoyankas with cherries, pickles and sea buckthorn and they were all amazing and had a right amount of buzz.
