About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
Welcome to The Anchor, one of Ripley's oldest and most historic pubs. Bought by the owners of Drakes Restaurant in 2013, it has been transformed into a food-led pub restaurant. The pub serves Steve Drake's version of pub food, with a team led by manager Iain McArthur and head chef Michael Wall-Palmer. Using both local and regional produce, Michael creates dishes where flavour, taste and simplicity are the focus.

I had lunch at The Anchor with 3 friends last Thursday. We were greeted warmly but had to wait a long time for our dishes to arrive. Two of the party had chosen the burger, two the venison, which sounded very attractive on the menu. The venison arrived on cold plates quite a while after the burgers. The dish looked beautiful but was cold. It was taken away and replaced, on slightly warm plates but the food was at best tepid. The two eating the burgers said that their meals were not as hot as the should have been. The side dish of fries was hot and perfectly acceptable. Those who chose the pear for pudding chose well. It was delicious! We voiced our disappointment with the main courses and were not charged for them. This was a welcome and generous gesture. I can only assume (and hope) that there was a problem in the kitchen that day and that The Anchor normally serves hot dishes piping hot on hot plates. We are fortunate in having a restaurant included in The Good Food Guide on our doorstep and look forward to a happier experience on our next visit.

Good but wonder whether it is quite the value it used to be. Perhaps the impact of inflation is beginning to bite and I ought to allow for that.

The first day of the new weekend brunch menu and it was superb apart from toast/ bread items need to be included to make it a more authentic Brunch which Americans and many European visitors are used to. Lovely atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff.

A charming gastro pub with exceptional food, good service and a bit of character. Well worth the small detour off the M25/A3 - distance from interchange less than 5 minutes. To walk off the delights of dining, try Wisley gardens - less than 5 minutes away by car.

Food was exquisite but like so many 'fine dining' restaurants I felt that the portions were a bit mean. In particular the absence of vegetables unless you have side orders at £3.50 a throw (plus 10% 'discretionary' service charge). Also the only potatoes on offer were chips or croquettes. Far better surely to include with the main course a dish of freshly cooked seasonal vegetables to share. When I mentioned this discreetly to the waiter as we settled the bill (I did pay the discretionary 10% as overall the meal was very good) he wanted to argue the point rather than a simple 'I will pass your comment back to the chef' which I found rather irritating. I have been to the Anchor three times now and have ordered off both the fixed price and a la carte, and have left each time feeling the same - stingy! Clearly I am not the only one if you read the reviews on tripadvisor.
