About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for groups
  • Good for special occasions
Whether you come cute with your girls, make it a date with your mate, visit as a mommy-daughter duo or take time just for you, Akwaaba Tea Salon & Event Space offers 90 minutes of pure indulgence in a sophisticated sanctuary. Here’s where you can take a breath while you take a sip of fine, loose-leaf teas and experience a cultural spin on traditional English High Tea fare. Think deviled eggs with a chunk of Southern-fried chicken instead of egg salad finger sandwiches. And homemade peach cobbler and banana pudding upstage macaroons every time! Oh, and did we mention the live jazz music at our 1 pm Sunday seating?!

Akwaaba Tea Salon and Event Space is the latest hospitality experience from Monique Greenwood, the former Essence magazine editor-in-chief who took the lodging industry by storm with the 1995 launch of her award-winning Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inns, one of which is in Philadelphia, right down the street from the new tea salon and event space.

The venue, decor, food & TEA ALL fabulous!! We are very thankful to have such an elegant and professional black-owned establishment in the Philadelphia community. The Sunday Lancaster High Tea and Live Music experience was so cute. I went with a small group of friends and the five of us were seated at a long table with an excellent view of the live pianist. Our server, Joe(?), was great and matched our fun energy. He kept us laughing and taken care of throughout the service. We were able to try a few of the teas since we each ordered a different blend, but the overall favourite was the Afropunk tea. It was delicious! It was also super cool to smell the teas before choosing, it added a unique layer to the experience. The snack towers were lovely and picture-worthy. Though I would recommend planning to eat a more substantial meal either before or after (probably after) tea service. The sweet and savory bites were tasty but not meant to be a full meal. I would definitely come here again, either with a small group, alone, or for a special occasion with my mom. I hope to visit the bed and breakfast too!

Lovely high tea option. We had a good time. The tea was good, though a few were out of stock. The menu is beautiful, however, not the best option if you are dairy intolerant, like me. The service was excellent, and the server did check in on my food allergy when she sat us, but very little adjustment was made, so I was very limited on what i could eat, which was a bummer because it all looked yummy. Overall, 4 stars. 5 if you are food allergy free.

The cost of the experience far exceeds the quality and value of the service and food. I will not be a repeat customer.

If I could rate higher than 5 stars, I would! Everything about our experience at Akwaaba was beyond perfect. We were immediately greeted by Joe, who was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun for the entirety of our service. The tea selection is wonderful and there’s definitely something for everyone. The food was absolutely outstanding!! I cannot speak highly enough about how delicious everything was. You can tell the level of thought, detail, and love that goes into every bite. I enjoyed myself immensely and would go again in a heartbeat!

Love the experience here. Tea selection was great and food was so flavorful! A few of the desserts were a tad too sweet for my own personal preference, but still good nonetheless. The scone was so good—very moist—which is quite surprising because most scones I’ve had were always on the dry side. The scone came with some kind of cream and jam to eat with it and had a really bright, citrusy burst of flavor. Their take on deviled egg was so different and might be my favorite bite. There was also some kind of caramelized onion pastry that was delicious. I’m usually not a fan of anything onion but it was actually really good—the onions were caramelized to perfection leaving a sweet and fragrant taste in my mouth that wasn’t pungent. There was also a curry flavored seafood salad stuffed inside of a croissant that my partner really enjoyed. Overall, highly recommend this tea salon for great ambiance, service, and food!

This was our second time at this location. The first time was marvelous! We had a great seat, with great service, but this time was the exact opposite! When we walked in, we were told our reservation was two, but I clearly made it for three. The server noted her mistake and then we had to wait for her to flip a table that was clearly made for two to add another setting. The seat and table was extremely tight and I couldn’t get comfortable because a bar was where they placed my chair. Clearly because we were sitting at a place for two people. The service was both rushed and minimal….our water got cold quickly and we had to ask twice for it to be replaced. This was the total opposite of our last experience, so I do recommend that people visit, but I will not be visiting a third time.
