   Celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with friends here. The staff were very pleasant and the food very good. However the toilets need a bit of work on them but overall a very nice experience.

   Appalling service. One hour wait between starter and desert, bought the bill out before I'd even been asked about whether me or my partner wanted a desert. Lied to me saying that there were dauphinoise potatoes on my plate when in fact it was a fondant. Food very average, could've cooked it myself. Don't get why this place has such good reviews, the place was dead on a Saturday night and I now know why. Won't be returning.

   Good food in a very pleasing ambience. Service was good with all the staff being friend,y and helpful. Decent value for money, would definitely visit again

   Excellent location, superb menu with not too much choice to confuse you. Excellent service and I thought a reasonable price at £55 for a 3 course and a 2 course with drinks. Would definitely go again.

   Great for pre-theatre meal, small portions food not very hot but tasty. Just one veg was served. Good location. Staff. We're lovely and the service was quick.

   Extremely disappointed. Starter (Terrine) tasteless. Hardly Chef prepared. The chicken main meal was similarly tasteless. Ambience stale. Downstairs room cold. Expected fine dining. Far from it. The waitresses were friendly though. Won't be back.

   Beautiful intimate dining room although a little quiet on the evening we visited so it lacked a bit of atmosphere but this wasn't the restaurant's fault. Service was first class and you were made to feel special which was lovely. The food was well presented, tasty and good value for the 3 course set dinner. If I had to make a slight criticism, we found the food a little plain. The terrine was ok but could've done with a dressing or chutney, just a bit dry. The chicken with brie was big but not particularly juicy and tender and served with saute potatoes, plain green beans and red wine gravy. Nothing wrong with it at all just felt a little like something I could've made easily at home. The lamb was beautiful. No pineapple jelly left for the creme brulee so opted for chocolate brownie instead which was rich but delicious. Overall still a pleasant experience just felt something a little lacking.

   What a fabulous space, listed building with a bit of history, matched with very attentive service and food which was almost terrific, but for a few minor details like a lack something green to give colour and variation to an otherwise great venison three ways, for example. Definitely worth a visit, even in the competitive market that is York's food scene.

    Booked a meal here as a pre theatre meal for my 54th birthday for my daughter. Not a stones throw from the Royal Opera House, we arrived to a warm welcome, service was excellent, very attentive, food gorgeous, quick between courses hardly any waiting time. I would have scored all five stars on my review, however our table was downstairs and lacked atmosphere and given it was my birthday I would have liked to have been in the main restaurant.
