horrible service...took forever to get order taken. they gave us identical menus but one menu was much higher price for the same dishes. we told them we of course expect our bill to reflect the lower priced menu....it did not happen...they charged us for the much higher price...food was bland and for the huge prices it was very very disappointing.

There was nothing exceptional about this dining experience. The utensils were scratched. The service was not friendly and many times we had to ask for water, coffee and orange juice to be topped up. Overpriced for what you get. I would not recommend this restaurant

First of all, as a family of four we have eaten at many 5 star hotels across the world, so our review is based on comparisons with other meals served in 5 star locations. We ate here on xmas day as part of a 4 day visit to New York. We were told getting a seat at the Waldorf on xmas day was almost impossible due to demand. Really?? I have no idea why there would be any demand for a meal here on xmas day, or any other day for that matter, rather than to say "I have eaten at the Waldorf". Big deal I'm afraid. Peacock Alley is very poor value for money, and the quality of food is average to say the least. For the eye watering prices, and location within the Waldorf lobby, one would have expected some kind of wow factor, which was completely missing. The buffet was average to say the least, and no where near the quality of food we have experienced elsewhere in the world for half the price. Choice ranged from shell fish to sausages, potatoes to roast beef. All extremely obvious with no real chef input in terms of quality and inspiring choices one would expect from any 5 star venue. All this within an open plan buffet setting in the hotel lobby, with all the hotel visitors gawping and taking photographs at your face level as you are spooning your food on to your plate. The phrase feeding time at the zoo sprang to mind. Finally, to have a meal at the Waldorf where salt, sugar, pepper etc are supplied in paper sachets, diner style, in bowls at the table, (even the tobassco sauce, when requested, comes in a tiny plastic bottle) sums up how little thought and attempt is made in making the meal fit the venue - taking the customer for granted and resting on the laurels of the hotels name is how I would sum up the Peacock - will not be back and would not only not recommend, would strongly advise against. New York is almost fully open on xmas day, so booking a meal at a restaurant elsewhere in Manhatten should not be a problem for you.

Once in a lifetime treat ~ the Christmas Day buffet at the Peacock Lounge. Some dishes stood out ~ the chestnut soup and the lobster bisque. The smoked salmon array was outstanding and the shellfish, for the most part, was excellent. The meats were good, not great. The lamb was delicious, but dry, and the duck breast, while the flavor was excellent, it was a little too rare and tough to chew. The dessert spread was beautiful. There's no real table service since it's a buffet ~ the servers basically replace silverware and beverages, but the staff at the Waldorf is always among the best anywhere. In the main lobby seating area there was a pianist of sorts, but there was a great harpist in the back section where we were seated. Not the greatest gastronomical event, but overall, as a one-time dining experience in one of the world's finest hotels, it was well worth it.
