About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Good for special occasions
Little Italy was built by the fishing industry. Ironside attempts to continue that narrative. It's our contemporary interpretation of the classic fish house and oyster bar. Located in a historic auction house on India St we did a full comprehensive restoration of the building, with three open-air culinary hubs featuring an expansive raw bar, chefs table, and bakery. We tried to be mindful of the past while looking towards the future. Groups of 6 or more will be charged an automatic 20% gratuity. A 4% surcharge will be added to all guest checks. For group reservations of 7 guests or more, please contact the restaurant at 619-269-3033 or via email to info@ironsidefishandoyster.com.

Ironside is now taking reservations for patio and dining room seating.

We are now offering Happy Hour MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 3:00PM - 5:00PM.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Moira Hatfield

From the OpenTable editors: Portholes, anchor hooks, and an enormous octopus sculpture—the nautical energy is strong at this seafood giant. Executive chef Danielle Van Steen puts her stamp on highlights like bone marrow with tuna tartare and sesame smoked trout. The sprawling restaurant is set in a former auction house, hinting at San Diego’s maritime past.

The atmosphere is what one would hope for in a Saturday night! Vibrant and people watching and comfortable for the most part. I did have to ask for an armless chair as the armchairs are for people who are not plus sizes. A Note: corkage $40! The web says $15 which we thought was an error but $40! Come on as this is very high anywhere!! The oysters were tasty although I have had much better for the price. We did a selection of 3 and only one had any meat in the shell; others will minimal. The sauces were delicious. The pulpo was excellent as a second course and with a chorizo base that was so tasty I would return for that alone. Order bread service if you try this Edith as we used it to clean the serving plate and it was special. And to top it off we had the Japanese sweet potato one with this course. The main course sea base was what you would expect for $40 and accompanied by tasty veggies. Our disappointment was the whole red snapper, we were told it was the last one so we asked to hold it. As we travel the Mexican coast often, this was not worth $65 and truly had no meat to share for more than 1 person. Was it due to malnutrition or a red snapper too young to harvest for a shared meal. Also I have had better preparation where the fish was the value and not the coating and fast fry. Finally the lemon merengue dessert was very good. For service, our wait staff personalities were very nice and welcoming. We did have to get their attention after being switched to a great staff person to a good staff person for good service. We waited a long time to order our main dishes. I think they seemed over whelmed; maybe short staffed. But they did their best and were pleasant and that’s only a comment and not a complaint. Overall with tip we spent $300 for 3 people and brought our own wine and no other drinks other than water. I would return for the pulpo and the Japanese potatoes and lemon merengue and order a beer and be very happy!

Food was great and service was good. We had the “Bigger” platter and a side of broccolini to share between the two of us. Paired off with a couple glasses of wine. I was very happy with experience until I got the check and saw a 6.8% extra fee. The server claimed that it was disclosed in the menu so I asked for a copy of the menu insurance enough. It’s there in the small print. Feels like a “gotcha”. I’m tired of this post-covid price gouging. There is no reason for this five years after the pandemic, other than just taking advantage of people. I will not be coming back to this place.

Had a very nice time. Service was excellent. Korean BBQ prawns were a bit underwhelming. Excellent cocktail selection

Food as always was great. Kitchen service was not. Sides came early, we waited for the mains then just ate the sides when we gave up. Dessert that simply needed to be pulled out of the fridge until we asked after a FOREVER wait miraculously appeared in a minute

A local San Diegan told us that Ironside has the best seafood in the city, so we went there on our visit. He was right! Really fun ambience. It is noisy, so if you are looking for a quiet conversation, go somewhere else. Awesome bar! Seafood could not be more fresh.

The place and hospitality were great! The food not so much unfortunately. The chef’s choice oysters were beyond salty, needed to pretty much drown them with garnishes. The chowder fries were delicious! The fried fish tacos were unfortunately really bland.
