Before the short, stout, handle-and-spouted teapot of today, there was just a bowl; a simple clay Chinese vessel that was made to hold and infuse tea leaves in hot water, before it was poured through a hole or strainer. It took until the 16th Century for the first actual teapot to appear, in Yixing, China: a town now famed for its teapots.

My Wife’s birthday, staff were very friendly and efficient, nothing to much trouble Room was air conditioned, very comfortable Choice of food and teas all excellent and we were offered more, a lovely afternoon

Fortnum and Mason is a heavenly treat me that I look forward to on my yearly visits to London. Magical...is the best word to describe this beautiful shopping experience. This was my first time indulging in the Afternoon Tea Experience which was purely DIVINE.

Expensive but worth it for a sense of occasion. The waiting staff are first class and the room has a deep underlying quality. Silver cutlery and beautiful linen napkins keep everything up to scratch. The selection of teas available is revelatory and the refills come on request. At the end of afternoon tea, we had apparently not eaten enough cake, so beautiful slices of chocolate gateaux were boxed and pressed on us. My daughter aged 9 was the birthday girl and she pronounced it the best ever.

So sad, this was our second visit and the service was not great on this visit- we appreciate that it was busy, but we were left for long periods waiting for tea, water and we were not offered any cakes from the cake trolley as suggested in the menu. Very expensive and we wouldn’t mind paying for service if it had been up to scratch - having over 16 pounds added for poor service was a bit much. On the basis of this visit I would not recommend or visit again - such a shame as our first visit was amazing.

The venue is superb, classic afternoon tea was delicious but service was very poor. Had to wait 20 minutes for sandwiches and 25 minutes for an extra pot of tea!!! For £55 each you would expect swifter service.

Service was wonderful. Waiter was very insightful in helping to pick the perfect tea. Food was delicious.

Il The è stato servito molto male lasciandolo in infusione e rovinando il sapore, i sandwich buoni ma scarsi e poco riginali , gli scones buoni, i dolci piuttosto cattivi! Esageratamente costoso per ciò che offre! Sconsigliato!!!!

Food was good but service was very poor and disappointing - no regular check in's to see if we had everything we needed, no offer of additional sandwiches / cakes etc. We have visited on 3 previous occasions and the service was much more personal on those times that this visit.
