• Cambodian • Bella Vista
Booked 3 times today
Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Overall experience is excellent. Intimate, but also helpful as needed. Attention to specific dietary needs and recommendations are a strong point. The entrees were stellar and unlike anything we’ve experienced. This is a ten out of ten.

When you first arrive, you walk through the bar. I was afraid we were going to be seated near the bar which was rather loud. Thankfully, we were seated in the back, where the walls opened up so that we could enjoy our dinner al fresco. It was a lovely night, if not a little warm. But we enjoyed the open air. We shared the arrancini appetizer and found them small but flavorful. The drinks were overpriced so we passed. The bread basket was okay but I always appreciate a little more variety. I had the grilled salmon which came with broccoli and could have really used a second side, like risotto or a potato of some kind for $27. My date ordered the orrichette with sausage, which was covered in a green sauce which didn't look appetizing quite frankly and it was just okay. It's weird when sausage is green. Overall, the service was very attentive and the ambience was nice but we likely wouldn't return because the food just wasn't really special in any way. Which is surprising, because we used to love all of the Lamberti restaurants.

The food was unusual and fabulous. My husband and I ordered a really interesting double dish with many different kinds of meat and fish—something we had never had before. We were feeling adventurous, I guess! And it was unbelievably yummy, and fascinating to eat. And we ordered a salad that was absolutely delicious, too. My cocktail was great as well. And the waitstaff was really good, too. So we will definitely be back—soon!
