About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
  • Great for live music
Entering its third decade, the Dakota has long been a favorite of jazz legends as well as patrons who savor the best of both art forms, the virtuosity of kitchen and bandstand. You can eat in the dining room and enjoy music second-hand from the adjacent club room; but you can also enjoy the music in the intimate club while making selections from either the bar or dining room menu—the best of both worlds. Patrons must note that online reservations through OpenTable apply to the dining room only. For show information and club reservations please call.

We love the Dakota and have had better dining experiences but this time the food was mediocre and the service abysmal. Our server disappeared for over and hour before taking our order and then when we finally did get to place our order, he brought the wrong food. We were unable to complain because he disappeared again. In the end, they comped half of our meal. I thought that was poor form when the whole meal was wrong. I guess we had to pay for the part of it we ate out of desperation. All that being said, the music by Ginger Commodore and Julius Collins was simply outstanding. We'll go back to the Dakota for the music alone. I hope our bad meal was just the result of one poor server.

Took my wife and two kids (6 & 4 y/o) here for Mothers Day Brunch. It was a little pricey but it was nice that there was live music included. The food was really good and you got a lot of it as the meal included 3 courses. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was the server started out with us on a sour note. She was confused and annoyed by our request for lids on the kids' cups so they wouldn't spill. The pre-set menu had kid options so we obviously were not the first people ever to bring children here and it being Mother's Day kids should be expected. The server went away to get the drinks but it took her forever and she ignored our table for about 10 mins. She waited on the few other tables around us 2-3 times each before she finally gave us our drinks. After we ordered our meal, she had a complete change of attitude and in the end was cheery and pleasing.

Attentive service from the staff. They made sure we would be served in time before attending a show in downtown. Smooth pre-dinner cocktails upon our server's recommendation (Sweet Thunder). Tasty salmon and pan roasted hen. Small portion, but visually appealing and yummy french silk dessert.

We chose the Dakota for brunch. Open Table said prices were under $30. The only brunch selection under $30 was oatmeal for $29.95!!!! Everything else was in the high $30s or $40s. Gluten free meant taking things away from the entree - not substitutions, or any meal that was completety without gluten to start with. In this day and age, I expect more creative choices in this category - restaurants shouldn't expect gluten free people to be satisfied with 1/2 a meal. Wait - there was one choice - an omelet with goat cheese. I hate goat cheese so I asked for a different cheese. No substitutions! The waitress defended this. For close to $40. I told the waitress about how the Dakota brunch was advertised on OT - as less than $30, and she said, well, you shouldn't use Open Table - use our website! She was also not helpful in describing how they would make their entrees gluten free "I don't know; I just got in here this morning." Really not what I expect from the Dakota!

We came for the music, but really enjoyed the food too. Excellent service, very fun atmosphere. Nachito Herrera and his combo were breathtaking. Delightful, joyous. We had a teenager and a couple in their 80s and all of us enjoyed ourselves greatly.

The Dakota is a great place to enjoy great food, drinks, and jazz. Our evening included Nachito's energetic piano, flat iron steak, and mojitos. Nothing could be better north of Havana.
