Tried to dine here on Saturday night. Asked if we wanted to be seated adjacent to the live music or in the dining room, we opted for the music. Harmless, right? Apparently, we were also opting for a prix fixe menu. I’m sure that’s a lovely option, but it wasn’t our preference. I’m a retired chef, with no wish to derail operations or be generally high maintenance. And I’d eaten here years ago, found the food exceptional and drove down from NH for a much-anticipated reprise of the experience. We would have been very content to order a la carte, or be seated elsewhere… pretty much anything but what we got, which was about 40 minutes of protracted negotiations with 3 different people regarding what circumstance under which I would be permitted to give them my money in exchange for food. It was crazy! Feeling very awkward and rather hungry, I eventually had to be rather pointed with management that we’d had enough and would be leaving. The weirdness of the evening was surpassed only by the disappointment. … And so easily avoidable! If a la carte service isn’t available, just tell people. In advance, ideally, of holding them hostage and making their night off-putting and bizarre.
