Chef Mariya Moore-Russell established herself as a heavy hitter on the Chicago culinary scene when Kikko took home a MICHELIN Star under her leadership—making her the first Black woman to helm a kitchen with one of the food world’s highest honors.
But the flip side of operating at the highest level is burnout, and Moore-Russell recognized that the path she was on wasn’t sustainable; something needed to change. So she took a step back from day-to-day kitchen life, using that time to reflect on herself and how she could forge a path that felt true to her values.
The culmination of this soul-searching is Connie’s Underground, a homecoming in partnership with OpenTable that brings Moore-Russell back to Chicago for a series of intimate dinners that promise to nourish both diner and chef. These dinners will explore all the ways that we can eat well, from the food on the plate to the work environment of those doing the cooking.
