About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for brunch
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution. It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence. Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

I originally had a reservation for 3 people, then a few days before we went 4 more people wanted to join. I called the restaurant and they said it was no problem. One of our people is in a wheelchair, so I notified the restaurant. When we walked in, the restaurant was very busy and noisy. They took us to the back room where we were the only ones for awhile. So much quieter and easily accommodated the wheelchair. The waitstaff was wonderful and the food delicious. This was my second time here and I will go back again whenever I'm in Wayne.

I had high expectations when I made my reservation and looked at the menu; however, the service and the food didn't match my expectations. The service was extremely slow, waited some time for drinks and water to arrive and then a much longer time for our food to arrive. At no time did our server let us know what was transpiring. The food was okay. I guess I expected more. I requested that my dressing be served on the side. It was not. There were tons of bacon bits all over the salad that I didn't expect. I guess I missed that ingredient; otherwise, I would have asked not to include it. The mocktail I had was better on paper. The noise level was extremely high until we were almost done with the meal when the place was less than half full.

Disappointed. Easter brunch - $59.00 per person. No coffee or tea or orange juice. Very small selection of muffins and breads. Deserts were limited with no Easter candy or much decoration. Last time coming and spending $310.00 for three people for brunch without even serving coffee or tea.

We found this online as it was close to Chanticleer gardens. We enjoyed the food and the wait staff. Would be happy to go again when in the area.

All around a great place to have a meal with friends. The Mushroom soup was outstanding. My entree was the Waygu burger which was well worth the added cost. The wife reported that her Turkey club was made perfectly. Definitely going back when we are in the area.

We booked a table for 2 for an early dinner on a Saturday. The reservation was for 5:30. We arrived on time and sat right down. The place was surprisingly already jammed. The food was good, but a bit pricey. They worked really hard to move us along after eating, which was a little off-putting. I understood that people were waiting, but it was VERY obvious that they didn't want us to have dessert or coffee, so we left sooner than we actually wanted to. I don't think I'd go back again on the weekend. I do like the historic building and decor, though it was a little loud having one large room with wooden walls. Overall, I'd go back, but during a slower time.
