White Barn Inn Ratings and Reviews

What a special restaurant. In my opinion this is probably the best restaurant in the state of Maine so I recommend it highly. I think it would be particularly good for a special occasion. Although I think it's a little bit expensive I think it's terrific value for the price. The other thing that I really enjoyed about the restaurant was it's fixed price menu. It is well worth the trip.
Try this place for a really memorable experience!
My boyfriend and I went for a wknd get away. Amazing time! Great food! Great ambiance. Service was impeccable!

My husband and dined at the White Barn Inn 15 years ago on our honeymoon and had a wonderful experience and fabulous food. Let's just say the 15 years have not been kind to the restaurant. Although lovely, the lighting is too bright. It was like sitting under a spotlight (and when we asked if they could turn them down, we were told they were on timers and they couldn't touch it). The food was sub par and the portions ridiculously small. The menu was pretentious in that they were more concerned with presentation, than flavor. We later learned that it went from a family owned establishment to a corporate owner. It's such a shame that such a magical place has lost its magic. For $400 for two It was not worth it and we will not return.
Not just dinner...it was an experience...
The experience from start to finish was nothing short of perfect. The staff was attentive and listened to our specific wine pairing requests. Our server, Jason meticulously selected the best wine suiting our taste to pair with each course of our meal. I would recommend anyone to have dinner here for a special occasion and/or romantic evening. It is more than just going out for dinner. It is an experience. Worth every dollar spent.
Add the White Barn Inn to your Foodie Bucket List
We highly suggest adding the White Barn Inn to your “Foodie Bucket List”! I must admit as I put in my recent reservation we were worried the White Barn restaurant my have changes since the departure this past summer of chef Jonathan Cartwright, a long time fixture on the Maine food scene, but new Chef Bissonnette and his team not only didn’t miss a beat but they hit it out of the park! From the wonderful food, menu and plate presentation to the 5 star professionalism but still not losing the warm and friendly interaction with staff to the cozy and romantic ambiance, as the piano place softly in the background. Thank You WBI we’ll see you soon! TJ Ranch Newton NH

We went for a Valentine's Day dinner last weekend. It was, as alway, magnificent. My daughter and I got beautiful red rose on the way to our table. Our server was well versed on each dish and she really cared that we experienced each course in all its perfect glory. My husband had the lobster which was cooked to perfection as was my filet and my daughter's salmon. The beauty of the evening is that it is not just the chef's perfectly exquisite dishes, it is an intimate setting where each table feels like they are the only ones dining. There is just the right balance of background music, seating arrangement and excellent service that allows you to enjoy precious down time with the special people in your life. Highly recommend.
Food, service - impeccable! Temperature chilly
Excellent, as always. A dining experience like no other. However, I retrieved my coat from the bell area to cover my legs as the temperature inside was very uncomfortable. The wine warmed me up, but the cool base board draft kept my limbs chilly. Summertime is best! Always fresh, exquisite service...will return and return again.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Pricey but worth every penny.
Dining at the White Barn Inn is equivalent to an orchestra with many beautiful instruments. Starting with the rolls from their bakery to little chocolates after my coffee at the end of the meal, each course was delicious and beautifully presented. We took my daughter for her 17th birthday. Our family are definite foodies and we enjoyed every course. The piano musician played our favorite show tunes during the meal and we laughed and teared at Les Mis and the other great pieces. My husband was not able to join at the last minute and they changed the reservation without any problems. I highly recommend the the White Barn Inn both for little celebrations and a treat with the special people in your life.
Delicious but cold
In every way the restaurant was superb, except for the temperature of the room. Very, Very cold. If the barn is that difficult to heat they should have small individual heaters placed around. Very hard to enjoy a terrific meal with a winter coat on.
Our dining experience was wonderful, as always. We treat ourselves to the White Barn Inn once a year. We are never disappointed.
It Was Amazing
We have had The White Barn Inn on our bucket list for years but due to life we just not got there. We were not disappointed. My husband and I normally babysit on NYE but decided to take the year off. We stayed for three nights in the Blue Suite. It was so relaxing and just what we needed after the holidays. The food was exceptional and the group they brought in for entertainment was excellent. It will be a NYE to remember.
Perfect Christmas dinner
We had our Christmas dinner here again this year and, as always, the food was superb and the staff wonderful, not just in terms of excellent service but also making a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere. The special Christmas items on the menu -- pheasant and chestnut soup, roast goose, etc. - are a festive touch and also delicious.
A romantic Christmas Eve dinner :)
Love the WBI!! It was the perfect place to have a quiet, romantic Christmas Eve dinner. The food was superb and the service impeccable!!
the change in dress code that allows very informal and casual attire from jacket and tie detracts from the experience of very special occasion
A Very Nice Evening
Our visit to the White Barn Inn was a very very nice evening. The table was located almost directly in front of the large window so we had a great view of the lit up Christmas tree in the courtyard outside. The meal was delicious and the attention to presentation for each course delivered was also extremely well done. They were out of the wine chosen for the dinner, but replaced it with a comparable quality/price. The meal was expensive, but you know that going in to the evening so very difficult to complain about price and every other aspect of the evening was well done. The service and demeanor of the wait staff was outstanding...... A very special place for a very special occasion.....and the Christmas decorations were well done! Finally, the piano player was excellent........ A very very fine evening!
We have been to The White Barn many times over the years. Always a special occasion and never disappointed. However, the last 2 times I have noticed the quality of the food has suffered. I took my daughter there for her 30th birthday, her first time, and I left feeling sad that her experience was not as special as I would have liked. Dry, tasteless fish. Sent it back and they did only slightly better the second time. I ate while she waited. Ugh. A $350 evening for the 2 of us and leaving sad is how I envisioned our celebration would conclude. Time for us to explore a special occasion option in Portland or Boston. I fear I will not be back to this beautiful place again.
Once a year four friends splurge on dinner at the White Barn Inn. The service, food ans wine are exemplary Every course from the smoked lobster, foie gras to the tenderloin were outstanding. Cannot wait til next year.

The White Barn Inn has an amazing fine dining restaurant! The dining room is the embodiment of rustic elegance! Both the service and the food are absolutely outstanding! We have been to this restaurant many times. On this occasion, we went on the Saturday night of Christmas Prelude in Kennebunk so they were live Carolers inside the restaurant. The restaurant offers a four course menu. I chose a foie gras appetizer with chocolate and cherries. My husband ordered scallops. For my entrée, I ordered their signature dish which is lobster nestled in a bed of homemade fettuccine. My husband ordered a seasonal dish of venison for his entrée. We both chose a brisket for the small inbetween course which was new to their menu. For dessert, both of us enjoyed the eggnog soufflé. We highly recommend this restaurant! After dessert, the restaurant offers another smaller dessert. On this occasion, mit was a white chocolate mousse. After that, they bring out pettifours and small muffins.
Atmosphere and environment; ? worth the price.
Have been a recurrent diner. While the environment and atmosphere of the place remain outstanding, the food has deteriorated in quality. Excellent menu descriptions and presentations with reduced quality content! Quail was unremarkable; the mushroom strudel at best mediocre and mismatched with the assortments; the tenderloin's crust had to be removed, being excessively salty; the venison moderately tender with turnovers of ?braised venison that clashed with the wine sauce. The pumpkin pie should have been sent back, while the "cheese selection" matched the corner market cheese offerings. Particularly disappointed, considering the affixed price! Excellent service which has eliminated past excessive pretentiousness.
Thanksgiving Dinner 2015
This was our first trip to the White Barn for Dinner. The bar was small but the bartender was great. The dinner was small portions and not as tasty as we expected. The turkey was bland. The venison was fantastic. Pumpkin pie bland. The worst part was how cold the room was. People were putting their coats on. It should have been better.
It fully deserves the 5 diamond & 5 star ratings
Our lunch service and food was excellent. We could not expect more. From the moment we left our car to be parked until it was returned to us, we were treated royally. We plan to try dinner next time and will also return for lunch. It is expensive but worth it.
Great food; impeccable service
We were there on a non-busy Sunday night . The lobster pasta was superb as was the pheasant 'sausage'. Service was very attentive but not intrusive. The wine list is excellent and relatively fairly priced for a high end restaurant. The 2013 Ken Wright Guadalupe Vineyard Pinot is exceptional. Try the Blueberry souffle for desert if they still have it on the menu. Excellent.
Excellent Dinner, Spa and Hotel stay
We went for a birthday getaway and the experience was amazing, Spa was really nice, great people working there, great massage and treatments. Dinner was exceptional, stay were very friendly and always helpful. Room was very nice and setting was awesome.
Decided to try the Bistro at The White Barn Inn for our anniversary. We ordered the Lobster Spring Roll. We were surprised that the spring roll was deep fried and overly so! We had asked our waiter for recommendations for wine. WE waited and received them after our appetizer. Our main courses arrived. My husband ordered a small steak and I ordered a scallop dish. Both we're very good. We tried to book a table for 30 minutes earlier and were denied yet we walked into the restaurant and the only other table was a party of two!
One of the best
I have been fortunate to eat at many truly wonderful restaurants but this ranks with the best of them. The dining room is a beautifully equipped barn with wonderful soft lighting. The dishes are extraordinary combinations of the finest ingredients where the chef has creatively made combinations that work beautifully without being crazy or shocking. The service was perfect, not fussy, with a very knowledgeable staff. I can't say enough about our experience there except go. You will not be disappointed.
We celebrated our anniversary at the White Barn Inn. It was an excellent choice. The food was very good and our server Nils was helpful in our choices and answering questions. He helped to make the experience more enjoyable. The atmosphere is relaxing and elegant.
Unforgettable dining experience
Highly recommend this restaurant for a special celebration and an unforgettable dining experience. The food was delicious, the ambiance was superb and the wine was fabulous. Great service as well. Will definitely be back!
Incredible old barn in a Relais!
What an extraordinary experience. The restaurant is in an old barn that has been converted to a dining space in the most beautiful way. The food was wonderful, service top notch. This is a very special place.

The ambiance is incredibly wonderful. This is a formal place although fancy dresses and jackets and ties are not necessary. The service is exceptional and the food preparation and tastes are artfully cooked, fresh and presented with culinary expertise. Prices are high so expect to pay. This is a special occasion restaurant.
I Love This Wonderful Restaurant
I'm so lucky that I live close by. I try to get there as often as I can. You can truly take time to dine, taste, enjoy every little bit. It's a dining experience that everyone should take the time to enjoy. I can't say enough about the food, service, atmosphere, music on the piano. It's as close to perfect as you can get. Make sure this is on your bucket list!
Bistro vs. Dining Room
Was not aware that there was a set price ($109.00 each) in the dining room. Ate in the bistro which did NOT have a great atmosphere. The food was amazing and the service was even better. Sat at the bar for coffee and dessert and that was much better.
Truly outstanding in every way. Only my second perfect score in many years. Did the 9 course tasting menu with wine pairing (it included an amuse bouche and 2 other surprise courses). Every course exceptional (rare to say that with so many courses) and the serving portions made for an overall manageable amount of food. Best courses: the seared foie gras on chocolate cherry bread, the butter poached lobster with applewood smoke, the parmesan bon-bon (I think they called it a sphere)with truffle, oyster with lemon sorbet, lemongrass gelato with ginger rice paper. As expected of a restaurant of this quality, the service was impeccable. If you are a true foodie and you are anywhere close to Kennebunkport, then you must make the trip.

A completely amazing gourmet experience. Incredibly good service (Andrea) throughout the evening was the perfect compliment to the truly exceptional food and presentation. The dining "barn" was very well done with a beautiful autumn display outside the large picture window. The 4 course meal was beautifully presented, explained and prepared. Each and every course was delicious with incredible presentation. The modern take on fish and chips (halibut) was so cleverly done. My wife has some dietary issues that the chef accommodated wonderfully without prior notice - extremely well done! One of my top 5 meals ever!
We knew the moment we walked in that it would be an exceptional evening. The service was perfect - friendly, informative, unobtrusive, but attentive. Having read rave reviews over the 40 plus years The White Barn has been providing joy to food lovers, our expectations were set high. How rare to finds ones hopes for perfection realized! From the best Cosmopolitan ever, to our final espresso, the level of excellence never wavered. The layers of flavors and the balance of textures were outstanding in every course. Obviously, we won't wait another 40 years to return.
Usually, the White Barn Inn is a fine dinning experience - impeccable service, attention to detail and intimate atmosphere. It was unexpected to find that there was no fall display - normally - a beautiful display of pumpkins, mums, haystacks and wagon outside the window. Also unexpected was the small dinning room in the back where we usually eat was closed. Our server was attentive but did not circle back once we got our meals. My steak was overcooked - never happened before - and my husband finished his dinner before I got mine back. He was given more soup which he did not care for, but I did. I am thinking I was not happy how this was handled and diminished the annual experience that I look forward to each year.
High Expectation - So Disappointing.
Very disappointed . The two courses selected out of the $100 set meal were very good, but a poor effort was made for a restaurant of this calibre to provide for dietary requirements. I was only offered by the waiter a sorbet for dessert ( which had already been offered as a mouth freshener between starter and main course) . Other lesser rated restaurants offer a chef creation other than sorbet. Fresh fruit is not even acceptable when plenty of advance warning is given. Friends offer more exciting desserts when one goes to dinner. Eg A summer fruit pudding would not be rocket science to a good chef . Also the dinner bread rolls were rock hard - heavy texture and over baked ( similar to tea scones offered with afternoon tea- for the standard of kitchen this is a disgrace). We also had to wait 1 hour 40 minutes from being served our starter and receiving out main course. The fruit pates served as petit fours were so sugary that they were virtually inedible. The waiter also treated my husband as if he was also dairy free and no other petit fours were offered to him - unlike all the other tables. Provision of tea was also a difficulty for this establishment ..eg Hot water requested at afternoon tea, in order to brew the tea bags was not boiling - in spite of being highlighted on 3 occasions. How difficult is it to see if water is boiling hot? The waiter put his finger in the water to see how hot it was!!! I understand from other guests who have frequented this establishment for some 20 years that the hotel has really gone down hill since being taken over by the current owners. This establishment is on the Forbes list- it needs to be removed as it discredits those who are really worthy of being on it. It over rates itself and underperforms. It is a shame as I suspect the chef per se is excellent but the rest of the team entirely let him down.
This restaurant is one of my all time favorites.
It exceeds my expectations every time I dine there, great food, service, wine, and ambiance, worth the high price. The lobster dish was outstanding in preparation and taste. The quail appetizer was excellent, as was the balance of the meal. I look forward to returning, however, it is challenging, as I live in Virgina.

Beautifully presented, absolutely delicious food and exemplary service!
Fantastic Dining Experience
There are not enough words to describe what an excellent dining experience we enjoyed at the White Barn Inn. The tasting menu with wine pairings was more than delicious and the highlight of our trip. The friendly and efficient service equalled the fine quality of the food and made the evening even more enjoyable. Highly recommend and will book again for our next visit!
