Awful service... really disappointed.

vip
Dined on April 3, 2016

Been here a few times in the past year and have loved this place... however, this time around, the service was TERRIBLE!!! We arrived at 6.30pm and immediately placed our appetizer order because our 7 year old son gets super hungry. Still waiting for food an hour later at 7.30pm. Finally, I remind our useless server and he "goes to check"... apparently realizes he didn't put the order in, makes up an excuse about the kitchen being busy, but I pointed out that they weren't too busy to provide food to people who arrived after us!! I really hate when servers don't just admit they screwed up. Anyway, entrees were delivered with appies... husband asked them to keep warm, but they didn't so we had luke warm main courses as well. Really disappointed and this experience really put me off coming here. So many other great restaurants in Santana Row....

Attentive staff and great food

Dined on March 31, 2016

Had to find a place for a spontaneous dinner the other evening and we gave the Village a try after walking by it at Santana Row. We were pleasantly surprised as to how the staff accommodated our changing requests for where to sit (my wife is picky). The food and wine ended up being very good and was prepared to our requested level - medium rare ( rockfish and lamb dish). Also, it was priced well. We will definitiely come back.

Enjoyable Lunch!

Dined on March 24, 2016

To begin with, the hostess was helpful in suggesting the side patio with heated lamps for our outdoor experience, since it was slightly cool and the sun would not shine onto the front patio for an hour. We all enjoyed our selections. The servings were large enough that we all took a box home. Our waitress was attentive - when she asked if we wanted coffee, I asked my friend, "Perhaps one for the road?" since she was traveling after our lunch. Our waitress brought all of our coffees in "to-go" cups. One suggestion: almond or coconut milk for those avoiding dairy. Thank you!

Perfect for a romantic date!

Dined on March 20, 2016

Great service and really good flights of wine! The location is perfect, as it has indoor and outdoor dining. The waiter was very nice and helpful. The food was tasty! Relatively small portions, but depending on your perspective, it might be a very good thing. Highly recommended!

Dined on March 14, 2016

I have had the octopus before and it was the best so on my last trip I ordered 2 orders. It should have been a dead give away to our server that we did not like it as everyone had to spit it out. Very disappointing. The Bistro steak was just ok, lacked flavor. Not in a hurry to come back and this was my new favorite restaurant. :-(

Dined on March 6, 2016

Sadly this restaurant is in another downturn. The food was okay, but the service was horrible and completely transactional. We were never asked if our entree was okay or if we needed anything else. The bus boy tried to take our plates several tomes before we had finished. Once the plates were cleared, our waiter came along and slapped the check down - we hadn't even asked for it! He never asked if we had enjoyed our meal, if we would like some coffee - nothing. We always leave a generous tip and take care of those who serve is in any restaurant, but not on this occasion.

Booth seating was nice. We had an odd waiter experience where he whisked past our table asked us what water we wanted then completely disappeared for 10mins so we didn't even get to order drinks. Finally another waiter served us and he stuck with our table for the rest of the evening. Octopus for appetiser was delicious except it mentioned chorizo on menu and none on the plate. I had lamb shank and it was delicious. Husband had the pork and said it was a little dry. Dessert of Creme brûlée was also tasty. Will we dine there again? Probably not.

Bright brunch spot

Dined on February 21, 2016

The menu is a great mix of sweet and savory dishes, light and hearty. I like the bloody mary bar. Service here I always find friendly and good. I did feel a bit rushed to go when they brought the check (even though it was not terribly busy) but that seems to be somewhat of a norm. Had a great time here recently with a group of girlfriends.

Great place for Dinner

Dined on February 13, 2016

The girlfriend and I came here for an early dinner and we sat outside. Luckily it was early enough to where the heating lamps weren't needed and we were sitting on the sidewalk so we had a great view of Santana Row. The food was great, we had the calamari, bruschetta, and short rib ravioli. It was a great experience and a great time, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Dined on February 7, 2016

I've eaten here many times and always enjoy the patio seat or sidewalk seating when the weather is good. Santana Row makes for a fun people watching experience while enjoying The Villages great cuisine. I had the beet salad which was outstanding and the chicken which was delicious. I am never disappointed here.

A Gem in Santana Row!!!

Dined on February 6, 2016

This place is definitely a gem in Santa Row. The atmosphere is super inviting--take full advantage of the outdoor seating when the weather is nice. The wine list was pretty eclectic as was the champagne options. This is not a wine bar to find your mainstream favorites; however, it is a wine bar to try different wines- globally. I was pleasantly surprised to find a variety of menu options, all of which seems to be locally-sourced and very fresh. The cheese board was incredible, with three cheeses and a few sides of olives, spiced nuts, and a jam. Two-thumbs for this app! The Garden Chopped Salad was extremely fresh and so delicious. The side of chicken I ordered with the salad was quite delectable as well. Caution- the portions are pretty generous which is not at all a bad thing. For the price, quality, options, and portions, the menu here is awesome. You get what you pay for, so while this is not a "cheap" spot, you do get (in my opinion) way more than you pay for. If you don't like to compromise quality over quantity and you enjoy a cool, fresh, awesome restaurant, this should be on your list of places to eat at next. I highly recommend VILLAGE California Bistro & Wine Bar! I know I'll be back again.

I love this restaurant

We had not been in a while. Parking is always such a chore at Santana Row. But we ventured out on this rainy evening. It was my husband's birthday. The food is wonderful. The pace of service never lacks. The only minor minor problem was that our waiter forgot to check and then tell us if sorbet was available. It wasn't. He comped my husband's coffee. We will be back.

The brunch menu descriptions were appealing, but the food was so-so, at best. The service was lacking, too - we ordered a cinnamon roll because our pregnant niece said she was starving, but it didn't arrive until after the entrees. Very disappointing experience.

front of the house

Dined on January 1, 2016

Had a 7:15 appt. Arrived a little before 7:00, told us they would seat us closer to our reservation time. Okay with that, went to the bar, but at 7:30 still no table. Finally got seated out on the covered patio section. Wobbly table, no discernible heat source. In short asked to be seated indoors. Took another 40 minutes to be seated as other dinners with later reservations were continually seated before us. When I noticed a couple leaving I actually went to their table and seated myself. So in reality we seated ourselves. The bus buy cleaned the table and eventually the waiter came over with menus. Food good but getting to the table was a chore.

Dined on December 6, 2015

We have always loved this restaurant and go here every time we visit Santana Row. It is always consistent and the menu is full of eclectic choices for all tastes. We were very recently there again and discovered that they have a special Bloody Mary bar during brunch! If you order one, you go up to the bar and choose the flavor of vodka you want and the condiments you want in your drink. Makes for a very personalized and satisfying experience ... Excellent!!

Needs to up its vegetarian game

vip
Dined on December 3, 2015

Our party was vegetarian, and there were only a couple choices for us -- for the mushroom hater, there was only one: the baked ziti with ricotta and "winter vegetables." However, it was virtually tasteless, needed salt at the very least, and came with only Brussels sprouts and two small broccoli chunks. Really?? Usually we've had better luck with the food here; maybe the chef was overwhelmed because it was so busy, although this was a Wednesday night. Our server was excellent, though, and we loved our individual glass-of-wine choices. Please work on some better vegetarian entrées!

It took the hostess 15 mins past our reservation to seat us. We were never asked whether outside seating was an option and other (walk-in) parties were seated before us. The hostess initially had an attitude and our food took 30 mins to reach the table. I would not recommend this restaurant as there are far better and tastier options on the row.

Eager to return

Dined on November 22, 2015

I'm looking forward to returning, (though the traffic in the area and the crowded parking at Santana Row is increasingly becoming a deterrent to the area on the holidays or weekends). I loved the menu and the fact they had small portions of many of the entrees. I wish they would have more awareness of gluten free options/substitutions but there were plenty of things to choose from. The food was very good, my Veal Saltimboca on grits was tasty, though my companion's Bistro Steak needed salt and pepper. A minor complaint in that it's easy to add and impossible to remove if overdone in the kitchen. We both agreed the Cauliflower/Broccoli Gratin lacked flavor. Service was mixed: the hostess station was excellent, our server was very good, but we asked for water, and it took five minutes or more. Even the wine order arrived first. Bread finally made it to the table after another wait. The ice cream we ordered for dessert arrived with no spoons to eat it with, and a several minute wait for those. The coffee was even slower arriving. These are all small irritations that didn't leave me feeling bad about the restaurant, but it was only 6 p.m., there were still several open tables when we arrived and it was a Saturday so I assume it got busy later and they were well staffed. I have to wonder what the service would be if they were crowded.
